That August Lull

Update #21 · Aug 16, 2011 · comment

Oh, hello there, it's been a while since we last spoke, hasn't it?

We wish we could say that is has been because we are just frantically busy with work on "Dark Before Dawn" but sadly we've been in a bit of a lull right now. The biggest problem seems to be that everyone wants to, I don't know, enjoy the nice weather or something. Oh, and our actors have been busy jet-setting around the world to places like Los Angeles, Vegas, Ireland and London. It's good to be a big-shot, eh? They are just practising up to be Mumblecore moguls once this little film project hits the big time ;-)

Anyway, now we are starting to get back to the grind. We have a second cut of the film and like a fine fortified wine it is getting stronger with age. We hope that with one more night of shooting we will be able to capture that last little bit of je ne sais quoi to make this baby into a masterpiece. Anyone up for keeping us company on another night of shooting via Twitter? We'd love to have you!

Well, that's all for now. We will be in touch again soon with further updates and (hopefully) a chance for you to start learning about when and where you'll be able to see this project that you've become such a part of. Stay tuned!

Shooting B Roll!

Update #20 · Aug 2, 2011 · comment

Hello!

Tonight's the night for shooting B-roll! Yay! We're very excited to head out to Elgin for another night of filming, fun, and frippery. We've got a small crew going out there to get some establishing shots of Elgin and probably some shots of a train or two. Hopefully the weather is on our side, there is a chance of thunderstorms tonight. Maybe that means the weather will cool down and the humidity will let my hair dry in peace. We'll see.

In other news we have a second rough cut that we'll be watching today to help us know what we need to shoot tonight! Between the two weekends of shooting we've done already, the shots seem to all be working out and fitting together nicely. Here's hoping we can continue doing so!

What We've Been Up To

Update #18 · Jul 23, 2011 · comment

Greetings!

Well, we've been keeping ourselves busy in spite of oppressive heat here in the greater Chicagoland area. Earlier this week we even tried to escape it by going up to Ripon, Wisconsin again to do another round of editing on "Dark Before Dawn" but sadly it was just as hot and humid up there as it is at our home base.

On the plus side, though while up in Wisconsin we were able to get another rough cut put together with some of the additional scenes that we shot at the beginning of July included. In spite of some hiccups on the night of production they are actually looking pretty good on screen so we can't wait to share them with you.

In other news we are planning on doing a bit of "B-Roll" shooting tonight to get some footage for the opening credits and for some of the transitions between scenes. One intrepid camera operator is going to face the wilds of the suburbs in order to acquire this footage at great risk of life and limb, so we will probably have more adventures to tell you about soon!

In the meantime, hope you are doing well and stay tuned for more news next week!

This Is How You Know Who's Really an Insider

Update #17 · Jul 12, 2011 · comment

Between you and me and the fencepost this little project will always be called "Night Train" to people in the know: and as one of our backers you are definitely in the know. Like good hipsters everywhere you will someday have the pleasure, nay, the privilege of referring to our underground title of "Night Train". If you're a super scenester you might even go so far as to call it "MCNT" which has been our production company shorthand for the project (MumbleCore Night Train). But for everyone else, this little project we have been slowly but surely developing for its place in cinematic history will be known as (drumroll please):

"Dark Before Dawn"

Yes, it was a long and arduous decision-making process to finally settle on this name. We literally debated the topic for weeks, and though we weren't able to give too much response to the suggestions you so kindly posted for us that doesn't mean they weren't considered! We finally settled on "Dark Before Dawn" for three reasons:

1. "Dark Before Dawn" is short, sweet, and refers both to the physical environment for our characters as well as the emotional place they struggle with.

2. "Dark Before Dawn" makes more sense than "Night Train" because the film really isn't about trains at all.

3. There are a large handful of films called "Night Train", the most recent of which was 2009. There is only one other "Dark Before Dawn" and it was made back in 1988.

So, friends and neighbors, that is why we are changing our title to "Dark Before Dawn". The good news is now that we have a final, formal title for this film we will also be able to put together a proper website for it. We have our domain name and everything:

http://www.darkbeforedawn-movie.com

There isn't much up on the site yet as we are still developing content for it, but rest assured it will be so awesome that nothing will be able to compete it. Not even puppies.

In other news, if you haven't already responded to the survey we sent you to request your contact information please fill it out as soon as you are able to- we'd really like to send you a thank you note that at this very moment is gathering dust on Gwydhar's drawing board.
