This is the maximum speed attained by the blade of the stick. This speed is usually reached just before the toe of the blade touches the playing surface.
The time required to complete the shot. This is calculated as the time between the stick leaving the playing surface and the stick impacting the puck.
The angle is the maximum amplitude of the swing. This is a measurement (in degrees) of the size of your backswing.
This metric is estimated based on other data (duration, angle, acceleration, etc.). The estimate assumes that you execute your shot correctly.
Acceleration is the intensity of the power transferred into the shot motion—a combination of the acceleration gained by shifting body weight and the acceleration of your arms.
The rotational speed is the angular velocity of the stick in degrees per second. It can be expressed as the speed with which the stick performs the circular motion of the shot.

The idea of providing sport players with autonomous sensors started in March 2012. At that time, we were experts in digitizing motion using hybrid solutions that combined inertial measurements and radio location. The sporting application became a side project to expand our expertise beyond just motion tracking and to include motion recognition and quantification. Since we were already working on an ice hockey player tracking application, we naturally opted for our national sport as the primary target.
V0.9 – V1.0
In June, we built our first sensor dedicated to motion detection and identification. To accelerate the development, our platform was composed of off-the-shelf development and sensor boards. During the summer of 2012, we performed several measurement studies on ice and in the lab to better understand the dynamics of key motions in hockey: skating, checking, shooting, etc. In August, we decided to focus on stick related motion, and the idea of the Powershot began to take form.
In October, we completed our first stable hardware version. We demonstrated early Powershot prototypes during a local event in Montreal where about 500 hockey enthusiasts had the opportunity to try it out. We received tons of comments and suggestions which greatly helped in steering the next stages of development.
During the tryouts, we realized how hard slap shots hit the puck and the playing surface! We literally obliterated our first prototypes! During this stage we also initiated the development of the enclosure that would become another innovation. The detection and quantification algorithm back then was pretty much unstable and was often generating erroneous results; however, we felt we were nonetheless on the right track but that much work remained.
From January to April 2013 we built a strong—very robust—hardware platform. We also fixed issues with the recharging mechanism and optimized the battery life. The sensor housing, moulded from a high-tech urethane potting compound proved to stand up to the force of professional hockey players. During our discussions with several players, we realized how much they were interested in deeply understanding the mechanics of their shot motions. From that moment, we decided to add new metrics that, at first, felt too “engineered” or “technical”; however, it turned out to be greatly appreciated by hockey players.
V2.2 brought the final version of the housing that enables the Powershot to fit in nearly any composite hockey stick. With this type of insert, players don’t have to make any compromises. They choose their preferred stick and simply insert the sensor unit in the shaft. Moreover, the Powershot is reusable and can be easily transferred to another stick.
During the summer of 2013, we developed a new, more energy-efficient hardware platform with more computing power for upcoming new features. The new platform is also more cost effective and ready to be introduced into a large-scale production pipeline. In addition, we designed a new type of molded housing that is even sturdier. During the same period, we also worked very hard to fine tune the algorithm. We completed a rigorous ice test campaign involving hockey players from nearly all ages and levels. With this new data, we were able to stabilize the puck speed estimator using the player level as a boundary data set.

Our team has completed an extensive series of in-training and in-game tests of the Powershot. So far the results are amazing and our next main challenge is bringing the Powershot to mass production. The application is currently available on the App Store for the iOS platform. You can already download and install the application to get a better understanding of the Powershot advantages. Tens of beta testers are currently using their Powershot on a regular basis and the feedbacks are great!
In order to mitigate the risks associated with going into large scale production, we are working with a world-class contract manufacturer. Such strategic partner brings a dedicated team of experts in design, test and production as well as state-of-the-art facilities. The delivery dates provided to the Kickstarter community come from a rigorous and comprehensive planning, which includes contingencies for unforeseen obstacles.

I am 6ft 5 and I have to use an extension plug in order for the stick to be long enough. How will the POWERSHOT work with an extension?
The FWD Powershot has been designed to fit into hollow senior stick extensions which are typically made of composite materials. As for any hockey stick, make sure you input the length of your hockey stick in the application for optimal accuracy.
