"DEJANDO HUELLAS (Traces) follows the personal and historic voyage of a Sephardic woman through flamenco dance. Inspired by the story of her Jewish and Persian ancestors and by her experience with the flamenco art form, acclaimed flamenco dancer Leilah Broukhim has created DEJANDO HUELLAS: an intimate and original expression of Ms. Broukhim's roots, her personal journey and the history of her people. The result is a moving and unforgettable work of music, dance and art, which reminds us that the traces of our past define our present and our future."
The 92Y's Resource Center for Jewish Diversity has invited us to perform the show at the prestigious Kaufmann Concert Hall in New York City on Saturday, February 25th, 2012 and we are honored that the FLAMENCO FESTIVAL USA has included the event in this year's program.
WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Although the 92Y is very enthusiastic about our event, they are unfortunately not able to fully cover our expenses (we are 8 artists traveling from Spain) and the Flamenco Festival has generously offered to help us, but through marketing and promotion.
With your help, we hope to raise $10,000 to complete our budget for the New York performance. Your support would be directed towards the expenses for 2 days for the 8 artists coming from Madrid: airfare, work visas, accommodation and per diem for food. Any donation, no matter how small, will help us achieve our goal.
Leilah Broukhim -- Artistic Director/Dance. Amir John Haddad -- Oud/Saz/Flamenco Guitar. Juan Jiménez -- Flamenco Guitar. Ismael Fernandez -- Flamenco Song. Mati González -- Flamenco Song. Luis Amador -- Percussion. Bahramji -- Santur/Persian Song. Olga García/Agnethe Tellefsen -- Lighting Design.
WHERE WE'VE BEEN
The project was first previewed last year at 92Y's Buttenweiser Hall in New York City and as a result, we were invited to premiere the full show at this year's Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow. News from the premiere quickly traveled to Paris, where we were asked to perform the show at the Museum of Art and History of Judaism in November.
Thank you so much for your support!

“For those of us who have seen her work and grow over the years, what Leilah Broukhim best symbolizes today is the effort which people from other whereabouts make to soak up flamenco and become a part of it. She, in particular, came from New York, where she was born in the bosom of a family of Iranian [Sephardic] immigrants and where she discovered that art form which contained a part of her own roots. Now she is a part of it.” (Silvia Calado -- Flamenco-world.com)
"Many of us witnessed her coming up in the flamenco world and now she is every inch the consummate flamenca, leaving us all breathless. Ms. Broukhim looked as if she has stepped into our time from an earlier century, her features are certainly what God patented to define Andalusian beauty. Any sultan would have surrendered his kingdom for her hand. She is illumined from within and her performance brought to mind the rare scent of an ancient perfume we were acquainted with somewhere in our collective past." (Damaris Solis -- Flamencobuzz.com)
"That day she seemed destined for triumph (...) A young dancer appears. Different. She walks with unique expressions. Racial, authentic movements. Vibrant flamenco. She stops. She feels. Everything about her is pure flamenco. Nor singing, nor playing can be heard. Eyes and ears only for her. The audience roars. Standing ovation, lively 'olés' and triumph." (Jorge Sánchez -- Jondoweb.com)
"Leilah Broukhim exudes flamenco through each pore of her skin and her magnetic presence and art alone suffice to fill the stage. She has an innate sense of rhythm, (...) the makings of one of the greats and a rare capacity for transmission." (Murielle Timsit -- Flamenco-culture.com)
