Black Hawk Middle School students and staff will work with a local artist to paint a mural on the school community garden shed.

The RestART Program will be working in collaboration with Lynn Tofte, the art teacher, and the students at Black Hawk to design and implement a painted mural on their community garden shed. Throughout the course of the project youth will gain skills in design, painting, and teamwork while beautifying an important community space. The community garden is currently a resource for the youth attending school, faculty, and surrounding community members. The garden provides opportunities for learning and teaching, growing and using fresh food and flowers, and bringing all members of the community outdoors in a shared space. We are thrilled to be using the she as a tool for teaching and practicing community art as well as brightening and beautifying the shed as part of this shared space.

Planning for the project is scheduled to begin in March, and we will start transferring the design and painting with the students in April or May as weather allows. The projected timeline is 50 hours including both planning meetings and afterschool sessions of painting with the students.

The Black Hawk Middle School garden is an important and valued community resource. The mural project will grow this already important landmark to provide further learning opportunities, positive engagement of students in the arts and in their community, and beautification of the school and surrounding neighborhood.
