The Brydge: Kickstarter Campaign
Hello Everyone!
As our Kickstarter campaign winds down, we can’t say enough how extremely thankful we are for everyone's support. We have been pouring our lives and hearts into this project for the past seven months and everyone here has made it worth it. Thank you so much.
With just a couple days left until our Kickstarter project closes we wanted to give you an update with everything going on. We have narrowed down our manufacturing options, are currently receiving a final round of quotes and In the next couple of weeks will finalize our choice and begin to work directly with them to begin the tooling process. There will still be several weeks of tweaking and improving the design to bring it to production readiness.
Regarding the design, here are some answers to questions we have received:
Upgradable Hinges
We are very happy to let you know that it appears likely we will be able to make the hinges upgradable, meaning that, barring any major design changes to future versions of the iPad, when the next iPad is released, you will be able to upgrade and replace the hinges, rather than buy a whole new keyboard. Being as we don't know what future iPad generations will look like, we can't promise this will be possible, but as long as they don't vary too much, it should be. This was an idea that many of you brought to our attention, so thanks! :)
International Keyboards
At this time, we still aren't sure which international keyboard layouts we will be able to accommodate. We can't just order one or two units from our manufacturers, they must be in bulk so it would be impossible to accommodate everyone’s requests. We are, however, looking into the possibility of taking our standard Brydges, replacing the keys and re-coding them for international languages, but we'll need to finalize our design before we know for sure we can do this. We will keep you posted and will know what we can do before we go into full-scale production.
Backlit Keys
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we will be able to offer backlit keys for the Brydge. We have spent a lot of time looking into this because it would be really cool. The main problems are that it would increase the thickness of the Brydge, require some substantial redesigns and delay our manufacturing quite a bit. It is a great idea that many of you brought up. We'll definitely keep looking into it and If anything changes on this front we'll let you know.
Thank you!!
We would like to take a moment and acknowledge that we could not have done any of this without all of you and want to thank you sincerely. Without you Brydge would not exist, and we believe we now have an obligation to work as hard as we can to produce a quality product and deliver to you as quickly as possible. We will spend the next several months endeavoring to do this. Producing Brydge will continue to be our full-time job for as long as it takes.
We will continue to post updates as major developments occur, but we know not everyone is interested in hearing about every step along the way, so if you have any questions about our progress or just want to check in, please feel free to email us at info@thebrydge.com.
Thank you!!!

I also vote for QWERTZ If you can build some units with international layout, then send mine with QWERTZ Layout !
Creator Marc Green on June 22, 2012
The main problem with keyboard layout is that the international (ISO) keyboards contain an extra key that is absolutely essential for many languages. Without it, the user may end up without a certain special character (such as a front or back slash) when using his language.
The new Macbooks are available as 78 key US or 79 key ISO. I understand you cannot accomodate all different countries/layouts but at least you should ensure that a 79 key version is available. That having been said, my vote for the key assignments is QWERTZ (German).

hello,
great device and I can't wait to get it,
being Belgian, the possibility for an AZERTY keyboard would be great
I'll follow the updates

i like the glow-in-the-dark-ink ideas...
i prefer QWERTY keyboard :)

Any chance of a Dvorak model for us dedicated few? It could be made with the same metal frame and the same keys, only the F, J, U, and H keys would need to be screened differently.
The iPad supports Dvorak natively, so you wouldn't even need to modify the Brydge's firmware if you didn't want.
I, for one, would happily pay extra for a Dvorak layout Brydge. I know a couple family members and friends who would as well.

AZERTY Layout for France and belgium market would be really awesome, i agree to pledge more if necessary to get this layout.
Have a nice day,
Creator Chillance on June 3, 2012
Don't you guys know the QWERTY layout by now? :)
Also, won't the iPad itself lit up the whole thing as well?
Creator Nicholas Rose on June 3, 2012
Although I personally don't mind having a thicker Brydge if it is backlit, I can understand why it won't be included. As an alternative, you could try Andrew's idea and use glow in the dark ink. Alternatively, you could embed small LEDs in the bezel surrounding the keyboard. These should light up the general keyboard area. Although each key won't be individually backlit, there should be enough ambient light to make seeing the keys in the dark possible.
Creator Andrew Eller on June 3, 2012
thanks for the update.
About the backlit keys, as an alternative have you looked into using glow in the dark ink for the keys? I imagine the iPad would be bright enough to make the keys glow.
