This project is for a long-awaited Collectors Limited Edition Hardcover book of my best Environmental sculptures. If you are not familiar with my work, please go to www.greenspiritarts.com to see the Faerie Houses and "Eartherials" sculptures. If you follow the links to my online bookstore will see I've already published 3 softcover books with Lulu.com but this will be my first hardcover book. You'll also see that I have a lot of other products using my images. Perhaps you have seen the very popular calendar published by Pomegranate in your local bookstore or card shop. I already have more than enough images for this book, many thousands in fact.. The hard part will be narrowing the group to just 100 or so selections!
The book will be hardcover, case-wrapped and be about 80-85 pages long.(it will be longer if we get a lot of backers and go over the goal ) Full colour. 8.25 x 10.75 inches. I call it "Limited" because we will only print whatever we need to fulfill the donor pledges of this campaign plus 50 additional copies which I will sell on my website. And that will be IT. You may want to consider getting more than one copy. ( Imagine what the first Andy Goldsworthy, signed, limited edition book would be worth if he had made one at the beginning of his career.) Each of my books will have a very special page dedicated to the FIRST 65 donors who have pledged at the $100 level... a sculpture with their names digitally inscribed on the stones of the sculpture! In each collector's edition there will be an individually crafted little surprise at the front of each book. Each book will be inspected for quality, signed and numbered by me, and personalized if you wish.
The budget has been very carefully constructed. It covers the cost of producing the Collector's Edition hardcover books plus shipping them out after I add my personal touches. Also covered will be the production costs of the paperback version (which will not have the special features of the Collectors Edition Hardcover). Additionally in the budget are costs for the DVDs, and other rewards, and their shipping. I've also included the fee for a professional editor because we will need one for this project. (I have one who is willing to work for 1/2 of their usual rate because they believe in this project ). The books will be published thru Lulu.com and the paperback version will become available worldwide. The Collector's hardcover version however will ONLY be available to this group of supporters and thru limited sale on my website. It will be a very exclusive item. The colour hardcover books are expensive to produce in short runs, but Lulu generally does a great job and I will be personally inspecting and proofing each copy so if it is not perfect, it will not go out.
This is my first project with Kickstarter and I hope it is successful. We could do a lot more projects like this in the future if this one works, so please do tell all your friends. This only works if we activate all of YOUR individual networks. I don't Twitter, so those of you who do will be really important to bringing this project to the goal. I've put up some very sweet rewards at ALL levels for my backers and feel this could be a really exciting way to work in the future as an artist... to meet directly with the fans and give them what they want. The ultimate reward. I will build a custom Faerie House (suitable for indoor use only) just for you. We will collaborate on the elements that you would like to see and what is possible, given the available materials. This house will be made AFTER the book goes to press so expect this to take some time to get finished, but it will be a lighted Faerie house and it will be completely original and unique. You will also get 2 Signed and numbered copies of the book and all the other swag listed above. This house will be not in this book-obviously. House will be fully detailed and on a sweet little display and will be approx 12 inches x 12 inches by 12 inches, on average. I work year-round creating ephemeral sculptures, mostly on-site out of found, collected natural materials. I do this primarily in the Boquet river basin of the Adirondack Mountains of northern NY. Spirals, orbs, circles and portals bear the imprint of the Feminine energies so imbued in nature. And then there are the wee Faerie houses. Whimsy & fantasy are woven into each piece to reflect a natural sense of "home".
How do I create the works? Basically, I pay attention. To the movement of the sun and moon, to the growing cycles of plants, to patterns and forms inherent in the landscape, to building materials abundantly at hand. They inform the work.
I bring a few small hand-tools. In summer - fine rose pruners for sharp snipping. Or needle and cotton thread to stitch leaves together. And thorns, lots of thorns. In winter - small hand saws harvest icicles from along the lakes and rivers. I am passionate about ice.
When the sculpture is complete I apply my last tool: a digital SLR camera. The minimally processed images attempt to convey the moment when landscape, material and artist were fused into an experience of Oneness. Whenever possible, sculptures are left to return to the Earth as an offering of gratitude.
