A collaboration of brilliant poetry and wild and whimsical piano playing by Lo Galluccio and Eric Zinman. We need your help!
THE STORY OF TERRIBLE BAUBLES
"Galluccio's voice is like sonic massage, her breathy tones so enchanting that her breath can be felt on the listener's right ear as if she were standing directly behind through some feat of digital conjuring. This girl has got it going on with her own tunes and with other works. The Lo must go on." -C.D. Di Guardia, The Northeast Performer on "Spell on You," Lo Galluccio's 2nd record.
"I remember drummer Laurence Cook for his work with Bill Dixon in the ‘80s and his occasional meetings with Paul Flaherty in the ‘90s. However, I don’t think I ever crossed keyboardist Eric Zinman before. This duo CD features energetic improvised music, inspired by jazz but quite remote from jazz, and not without humour. Zinman turns the electric piano into a surprising weapon worthy of the free improvising ring." François Couture, Monsieur Délire's Listening Diary on Eric Zinman and Laurence Cook's “Double Action” CD
"Terrible Baubles" is a song and poetry cycle -- a collaboration between pianist/improviser/composer Eric Zinman and vocal artist/poet Lo Galluccio. It's been in the works and performed at least twice in Cambridge, MA over the past year and a half or so. Since an artist grant Lo was nominated for fell through, Eric and she have turned to Kickstarter as a way to fund the recording and production of a new CD. They first met at one of her poetry readings when Eric bought the chapbook to "Terrible Baubles," a small but potent book of about 30 poems, (see a review in the 2nd update) put out by Propaganda Press. They began to work together musically and performed at Squawk, the Outpost186 and the Lily Pad. Eric's avant-experimental style of playing was a perfect match for her poetic renderings and vocal phrasing. Aside from wanting to go into the studio to record as a duet, they are now working with a cellist to fill the band out with more textures and harmonies.
"Terrible Baubles" is Lo's third published work, after "Hot Rain" put out by Singing Bone Press and "Sarasota VII" released by Cervena Barva Press in 2009. To see excerpts and reviews go to: www.logalluccio.weebly.com. In her third book she combines surrealism with a child-like candor about her surroundings, lost loves, and abstract subjects like grief and art.
The title track, "Terrible Baubles" is a chanted, bluesy poem that came from being overwhelmed by objects in New York City. Terrible means not just or merely bad or awful but mighty and varied and like enfant terrible, wonderful in some sense. But the material moves through longing ballads, elegiac and surreal poems of different inflections and moods and new arrangements of some older works. Eric's dynamic piano and percussion animate Lo's voice with a spontaneous sensitivity, a collage of shifting colors pulling you into the story and every phrase she sings. Some of the songs were composed first and others were improvised and arranged through playing. For some of you who might know Lo's first CD, Being Visited, "Queen of Mars" will appear on this record in a new version. All in all, there are about 4 spoken pieces and about 7 songs in the collection.
Eric and Lo have both produced several records on their own before. All were criticallly acclaimed. They will need money to go into the studio with an engineer and record the tracks with then to mix and master them. All this will cost about $1,000. They expect another several hundred to go to the artwork for the CD and another $700-$800 for the replication of 500 copies of the CD. All other monies will go toward paying the cellist and any other production expenses they may incur.
The donation rewards are demarcated on this page. Please do not hesitate to offer $15, $25 or $50. Any amount is helpful to them.. They just want to make the best CD they can by reaching their goal of $2,500. (Plus they need to set some aside for the postage to get the goodies back to you.) They really appreciate your contribution and look forward to sharing their most original and compelling sounds with you.
