Record conjures the space of a distant memory in live performance, allowing phantoms of that memory to be felt right here, right now.

You are here.

As you walk down this shadowy street of my (your) memory, pay attention to your body and the breeze going past, the way I (you) shudder as a leaf blows or a shadow rolls past – from the car, a train, a carousel in the distance.  Reach into my (your) pocket for a trinket or a token from that time – long ago yet not so long, for this object is right here in my (your) hand.  How does it feel? The imprint of it in my (your) palm, its weight in the fingers.  Gaze out and see shadows…nothing is very clear in this dim light, but still it feels familiar and I (you) can make out shapes and mood at the sound and the presence of my (your) body.  My (your) hand in someone else’s, but you (they) are no longer there.  What is that like?

This is the space of that memory.

Record is an evening-length dance work that conjures the space of a distant memory in live performance, allowing the phantoms of that memory to be felt in the present space, right here, right now.  I am collaborating with Emmy nominee Seth Easter (design), Jim Briggs III (sound), and seven dancers: Jung-eun Kim (aka Je), Helen Simoneau, Jacob Slominski, Kathryn Logan, Katie Swords, Pamela Pietro, and Julia Kelly.  We employ perspective, framing, time and shadow to flesh out the texture of memory itself.  Tiny objects, a table and chairs, childhood toys, a record player, live-feed video, old family photographs, and directional audio design are central.

Record began as part of my thesis research at Hollins University/The American Dance Festival. We have since continued to develop the work and have performed in-progress versions in Rhode Island, Philadelphia, and here in New York.

Finally, after these two years of development, I have the opportunity to realize my full vision for this project. One Arm Red's intimate and adaptable "Red Space" on the top floor of 10 Jay Street in D.U.M.B.O. Brooklyn, where we initially developed much of the work, now provides the perfect environment in which to create the full-fledged installation and performance.

The work is co-produced by One Arm Red, and we have thankfully received modest grant support as well. Still, we need additional support to fully realize my vision for the work. One Arm Red is a gloriously adaptable blank canvas in which to work.  We need your help in order to actualize the scenic elements (including live-feed video and shadow work) and multi-channel audio design, and to pay the dancers a fair rehearsal and performance wage.

Thank you for your support! And I really hope you can see the performance May 24-27 at One Arm Red.
