Meet the Mayor--or Run For Office Yourself!

Several of you asked if you could pledge to be the Mayor of our Companion cities--Chicago, Lost Angels, Shan Fan, or the City o' Gloom (assuming we hit that stretch goal!) That Reward Level is now up, and there are only four of them.
(If we don't hit our fourth stretch goal and all four Mayor slots are taken, we'll refund the backer who pledged last.)
Which city you get for your pledge will be determined by us. Then we'll work with you to use you or a character of your creation and his likeness in the book as one of our four mayors. See the Reward for details..
Before you pledge, remember that your alter-ego will most likely be dirty, corrupt, greedy, violent, and more than a little eccentric. He might even be dead. Or undead. It's a Deadlands Noir thing. :) If that bothers you, please don't choose this reward. (And if you really want to be a hero and even have a short story written about your character, see the Night Stalker level.)
Now here's the dirt on the Head Cheese of the Big Easy!
James McKendrew, Mayor of NewOrleans
If you believe the scuttlebutt, James McKendrew bought theoffice of mayor for a cool grand, but even New Orleans isn’t that cheap. The truth is he bought the plans for some new-fangled voting machines for a thousand and the rest was blood, sweat, and a little patent science.
James Andrews got his start as a researcher for Hellstromme Industries in the so-called "City of Gloom." As a patent scientist’s salary doesn’t exactly leave one rolling in greenbacks, he supplemented his income by slipping a secret or two to Hellstromme’s competitors. Eventually, he overstretched himself and had to flee Deseret just a few steps ahead of the good professor’s less pleasant enforcers.
He changed his name to McKendrew and ended up in Dixie where he latched onto the coattails of Louisiana senator Huey Long, better known as “the Kingfish.” During a mayoral election in New Orleans, the senator tasked McKendrew with rigging the city’s voting machines in favor of a Mayoral minion. The wayward inventor had other plans though—plans that ended with him drawing a fat check as the Mayor of New Orleans—plus any kickbacks he could finagle on the side.
The final results of the election showed a surprising amount of support for an unknown candidate—one James McKendrew. Now he figures the Kingfish will think twice about moving against him in such a high-profile position. Better yet, Hellstromme holds a few lucrative contracts with the city, so he hopes his old employer won’t seek to settle old scores should he ever be identified.
The mayor has proven amazingly adept at playing the Black Hand, the Red Sect, Hellstromme, and the Kingfish against each other, all the while turning a tidy profit. He’s not a villain so much as a clever man with a very well-developed sense of self-preservation. It’s even possible he can end up an ally for the heroes, but he's more likely to use them as pawns in a convoluted scheme that thwarts his enemies, or at least lines his pockets!

It's not paranoia. It's Political Savvy.
Creator Joe Thater on June 8, 2012
If a man has three separate independent aides check his bed, nightstand, and toothpaste every night for... "tampering" it doesn't matter if he has people out to find him, he's still paranoid. The old adage "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean the bastards aren't out to get you" works both ways.
Creator Lisa Padol on June 7, 2012
Is the mayor's paranoia really a delusion, given he does have enemies who are out to get him?
Creator Matthew Evans on June 7, 2012
Bought a Don spot, only sad part is I'm not making it to GenCon, Night Stalker would've been more fun but I don't got a cool grand lying around, unlike our good mayor.
Creator Da Mayor on June 7, 2012
Ahem... I don't know what you're talking about. I've never had the pleasure of visiting that fine city. Any resemblance to persons living in or fleeing from thae City of Gloom are purely coincidental.
Creator John Billings on June 7, 2012
Just $1,199 left for the city of gloom stretch goal as I write this.. would be a shame for the mayor of NOLA not to have his origin city in the book...

TWO! TWO vacancies for Dons. Conor: No comment.

WHO HAS THIS KIND OF MONEY TO BECOME MAYOR OF FICTIONAL LA?!
Creator Jimmy "JR" Ray Tyner III on June 7, 2012
And all 4 spots are already gone.
Creator Shane Hensley on June 7, 2012
Some of you may also notice that our Dons, which sold out very early in the Kickstarter, now have three vacancies thanks to those backers getting "elected" Mayor of our Companion cities and upping their reward level.
If you'd like to join us for our special game at GenCon or get your likeness in the book as an NPC, this might be for you! (It includes all the rewards of the Shamus level as well.)
