Help start a new tradition of Shakespeare at the Beach in Ocean City, Maryland starting with a unique production of Twelfth Night.
Can you imagine Viola actually emerging from the sea? The waves literally crashing as Sebastian leaves the beach headed for Illyria? Brown Box Theatre Project will utilize the beautiful setting of Ocean City beaches and parks throughout the area to tell Shakespeare’s tale of love and disguise: Twelfth Night or What You WIll?
Brown Box Theatre Project has been bringing quality theatre to the Eastern Shore for the past year and is excited to bring its most ambitious project to date: a new tradition of Free Shakespeare at the Beach in Ocean City, Maryland starting with a unique production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Ocean City is the perfect setting for such a production and has a community which craves more access to the performing arts.
This production would take place on the beach as well as on the site of the newly renovated St. Martin’s Neck Church for the public and would also tour schools in Worcester County to expose young people--likely for the first time--to Shakespeare the way it was meant to be accessed, as live theatre.
Twelve New York City and Boston based actors and theatre technicians will live in Worcester county for approximately one month rehearsing the play, building the set, and exploring the extreme stakes within the “comedic” world of Illyria. As the tale is a comedy, we often forget to remember what would happen if Viola did not disguise herself as a man, that Antonio is fearful for his life in Illyria, and that jests, as funny or seemingly deserving as they may be, can have great psychological effects.
We will perform for one week (6-10 performances) for the public and both public and private schools throughout the county. We hope to make all performances free to the public in order to make this experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Shakespeare’s texts serve as quality entertainment for all ages while propagating an understanding of the value of the arts and their contribution to the cultural, moral, and ethical life of the community.
