About this project
My COH eNsemble (Creatures of Habitat) is completing a new performance piece entitled habitat (de)fragmentation while residing with The Storefront Artist Project* in Pittsfield, MA for the month of January 2010. We began the making in summer 2008 in Adams, MA and have been working on it all over Berkshire County since then. (We did three public showings of work-in-progress: two in Manhattan and one in North Adams).
I want to finish this piece in a storefront in my hometown of Pittsfield and prepare to premiere it in this same town in spring, have it produced in summer somewhere else in the Berkshires and then tour it in fall beyond the county.
This is PHASE 1 of my funding outcry:
I need funds to pay dancers for (at least) 24 hours of rehearsal time and skill, funds to complete costumes and a unique + simple interactive set, and money for materials.
In other words, I need to fund this residency.
We have one month to complete the piece.
I have till Valentine's Day to meet my Phase 1 funding goal.
I have a few minutes here to suggest that it's worth it for you to help us.
I have unlimited rehearsal space-time that is heated (a dream). I have publicity support (so helpful). I have eager, skilled, dedicated and engaging performers (incredible). I have wildly talented guest artists that are offering a dozen free public participatory movement experiences for the community (an honor). I have an amazing multi-talented costume maker who just won a contest for tap dancing while hoola-hooping in San Francisco (a risk-taking riot).
I have a lot already and just need a little more to get through this next phase.
Please consider becoming a backer for this project. We want to move forward.
No matter what happens, I am not going to give up. I will find a way to finish this piece and I will invite you to sit with us in the dark and in the light and experience the curiosity.
please check www.fertileuniverse.com/events for a full schedule of public offerings + events held throughout the residency and for more information on the Creatures cast and work.

I consider myself a dance-maker. Though I suppose that it is really physical poetry. I design metaphors, bump into nuances and make them larger.
I was born and raised on General Electric. It has shaped my metaphors for better or worse. Internal and External. I bring good things to life.
I began to train my muscles and bones in the art of dance technique from the impressionable age of three. I knew I was born for it. My body was clay and my spirit has been true to it's purpose: create this way. Rhythm has been my grounding, and my tap shoes, at times, my drug of choice.
Life is beautiful and life is hard. Art and love make it worth it and keep it expanding.
My first dance-making was done with dolls and objects. I would arrange. Move them, number them. Enter and Exit them. Then I learned to do this with people. And I am still practicing on making it as meaningful as possible.
I have had the absolute joy and privilege to study too many dance techniques with too many amazing people to list here. I regret none of what my body has suffered for doing this. Now, I enjoy the techniques of Gyrotonic, Continuum, Reiki, Sweatlodge and Qigong to reward my body and spirit for all it has and continues to provide for me and many others.
The COH Ensemble (Creatures of Habitat) is a creative passion that lives at the roots of all my making. The opportunity to bond the elements that make us breathe, bleed and birth is an honor. This group helps me to express something I otherwise would frustratingly hold inside: My deep curiosity about and longing for connection to Nature, a force so often taken for granted.
And the ways in which we still ARE Nature.
