An update from Crysta:

I love biographies, memoirs, blogs, and anything that offers insight into the way people live.  I am fascinated by the way seconds/minutes/years of everyday lives can be transformed into interesting stories that touch others.  For my part in Homing Where I Roam, I have been gathering autobiographical materials that mark significant points in my life - buying and re-making a home, starting a career post-graduate school, growing a business, and more - and creating mini-projects that distill, splice, and sequence bits of this material into a dance, film, or improvisation.  I am looking for how “everyday” material becomes interesting when shared in the right context.

Here’s a homey update from Amanda and Whitney:

In our part of the show, we work with one’s sense of place in the context of home. A way we gather ideas is through our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/HomeMadeDanceProject. Here we ask lots of questions inspired by the home environment, everyday tasks, and personal memories… then create movement material based on the participant’s answers!

For instance, the question “What’s a meaningful object that you keep close?” led us to focus on one sentimental response about an old faded green bed sheet. We extracted ideas of softness, separation, comfort, travel, covering, and closeness to create a movement score.

Thank you all for such generous contributions so early in the campaign! We surly appreciate it, and we hope it keeps coming. This is our bare-dancing-bones budget but we have big ideas....and sometimes big ideas need big money. (or, ya know, bigger than average money at the least)

We thought you might be interested in some of the ideas we're working with. In my (Lily's) part of the show, we are focusing on familial situations/relationships and memories/stories during the holiday season...and of course, this is all in movement form. One way we started creating movement from these ideas was to abstract actions that someone might do during the holiday season. These words were: unravel, wipe, straighten, fold, wrap, cut, tie, stir, pour, sprinkle, collect, send, stamp, place, tear, crumple, and toss. Can you think of any more?

Here's a teensy-weensy 20-second sample of what some of those words turned into.
