A project to produce two recitals in Europe & one in San Francisco, featuring music from the West Indian & African-American traditions.
Dear Friends and Supporters,
This picture was taken earlier this year on stage in the Netherlands during an opera performance. I would like to return to Europe and present a different kind of musical tradition; that of the African-based music of the Americas. As some of you already know, I was born in Guyana, South America and raised mostly in the United States. As a result, I am culturally linked to both the traditional folk music of the West Indies and to the Negro Spirituals of the United States. In these recitals, I hope to bring some rarely heard gems to light and help to underscore the importance of the music from these traditions.
My goal is to produce these recitals in Amsterdam, Paris and, upon my return, in the San Francisco Bay Area. I would like to present the European recitals in February of 2012. I have already located two possible venues in Amsterdam and am working on securing one in Paris, France. It is my plan to record the first recital and make it available to my Kickstarter supporters! Additionally, I plan to perform the same program of music in the San Francisco Bay Area next spring and spice it up with some fabulous guest artists!
In order to make this project a reality, I will need funds to help pay for the performance venues in three locations, rehearsals, the accompanist fees, musical arrangement fees, recording costs, printing costs, postage and packaging fees and some travel expenses.
