About this project
Hi, My name is Kait Rhoads http://kaitroads.com/ , I am an artist living in Seattle WA. In April of 2011, a few days after my birthday, I am having a show here in Seattle at the William Traver Gallery http://travergallery.com/ . With your help I would like to present a catalog of ‘Soft Sculptures’ for the opening of the show.
Sara Traver is designing the catalog and we are planning for it to be around 25 pages. It will be soft cover with photos of work, process, written material by Richard Marquis http://dickmarquis.com/ and a short piece of prose by poet Stuart Kestenbaum. We will be working with an online printing company and I plan to print 200-400 catalogs at this time (with an option to print more in the future).
What are Soft Sculptures you might ask? Currently I think of them as hyper-realistic memories of an interaction with nature. I spent six years on a boat in the Bahamas and Virgin Islands when I was young and the aquatic realm is the root of much of my work. I especially enjoy working with a flowing, curving form; as to me it embodies force and reaction.
To make the work I take cross sections of hollow blown glass hexagonal tubing “hollow murrine” http://www.youtube.com/watch... that I link together with copper wire. They are a labor of love, in that it takes a long time to create a sizable piece. This hexagonal form refers to basic building blocks in nature such as wax bee cells or the silica hexagonal tubes that form all different kinds of coral. I treat them as architectural elements that when linked or ‘woven’ together can take almost any shape or form – but are best with curved forms. See my video Studio Visit Dec '10 http://www.youtube.com/watch...
I have made work in this style since 1999 and this will be my first catalog of forms specifically showcasing this work. The Soft Sculptures are difficult to classify as sculpture, glass sculpture, fiber sculpture, textile or craft and in that I find it challenging to promote the work to its ideal audience. Your support will critically broaden this work's exposure and increase my potential for getting the work seen by people who will support it's continued development.
I am offering great rewards: beautiful fine art jewelry made with hollow murrine; catalogs; cards and Sea Stone Soft Sculptures. Please go to my blog http://www.kaitrhoads.com/blog/2010/11/catalog-benifit-at-kickstarter/ to take a closer look at the Rewards. If you pledge your support, expect delivery of the Jewelry and Sea Stone Soft Sculptures at the latest February 7-11th, 2011, three or four weeks after the close of the funding drive, on January 17th, 2011 (I am out of town Jan 5-22). I will be able to ship the Soft Sculpture catalogs and post card in the end of March, so that you will have them just before my opening on the 7th of April!
Please check in frequently to my blog if you are interested in seeing the progress on the last 4-5 pieces as I race for time to meet the photography date in the beginning of January; I update my posts at least one time a week! http://www.kaitrhoads.com/blog/
Thank you so much for your consideration.
