TCP investigates the connection people have with their wardrobe by taking old clothes and creating something new with the material.
The Clothes Project investigates the personal connection people have with their wardrobe. People can tie memories of specific events to an outfit: a shirt from a childhood trip abroad or a dress from a first date. More often than not, people hold onto old, beat up, ratty clothing because of its sentimental value but almost never wear them. I meet with people with such items of clothing, speak with them and ask them to give up their unused clothes and allow me to make them a new, functional outfit that they would want to wear. Rejuvenate life to clothes that have sat in drawers for years.
My hopes for this project is that the people I meet will begin to see that even the smallest of rags can be reused. Nothing has to be trash, Anything, with a little time and creativity can be revived to the former beauty and functionality that it is remembered as. In a time where everything is mass-produced, overly packaged and poorly made, I want to help myself and my community look passed that. Revive the clothes and allow their beauty to parallel the memories that people hold preciously.
The Clothes Project consists of macro photographs, articles of clothing and accessories and video documentation of the process. Funds raised here will allow me to continue making clothes and printing photographs as well as move the exhibition from The Cary House Gallery at Salem Art Works in Salem, NY to ROTA in Plattsburgh, NY.
