Our Story

The  idea for the iHook system came from our personal need to use our iPod Nanos in our cars. We wanted to mount the Nano on the dashboard to make it visible and within reach. The only solution available was a universal mount that was too bulky and unreliable. This is how the first iHooks were born.
 
It took months of design work to come up with our universal mounting solution.  Every aspect of the iHook, from the shape of the platform to the mounting points to the precise bracket angle, is the result of collaboration and testing.  During this process it became clear that the new generation of miniature devices demand firm platforms wherever they are used.  We realized that a single iHook is not enough! 
 
 

Product:

To make iHook as simple as possible we used the built-in iPod Nano clip as a base for our design. The compact size of our unit matches the Nano perfectly. The design makes it possible to mount an iPod Nano on any available surface.
 

An iHook will give you easy and convenient access to your Nano in an automobile or on a bicycle, motorcycle, airplane, furniture, wrist band and even clothing. While the dashboard of a car is the obvious choice for the Nano placement, the sun visor, center console or windshield may also be used to mount the iHook.

 

Originally conceived for use in the car, iHook evolved into a solution for use everywhere you use the iPod. The iHook is not your normal desktop docking station. It is a truly unique and universal solution. It is the answer for a tiny device that always needs a firm mount. Here are few examples:

 

For sports lovers and people on the go: stitch the lightweight iHook on your clothes and make a fashion statement. Running, jumping or snowboarding – with an iHook, you are guaranteed never to lose your Nano.

 

If you are a two-wheel user, either bicycle, motorcycle or scooter, the iHook is the ONLY EXISTING solution to have your iPod Nano visible and handy. Mount it on a handle bar, fuel tank or windshield and ride safely!

Yes, the iPod Nano is tiny, but the iHook attachment system is even smaller. It’s so small that it be attached to a remote control — of course you’ll need a wireless transmitter for your player. Relax on a couch and listen to your favorite tunes with your control in your hand.

 

Whether you use a Mac or a PC, you can use an iHook to attach this elegant MP3 player securely at your workstation. You can prevent cables from accidently pulling your Nano to the floor, or simply keep it from getting lost in a pile of papers. Attach it to the computer itself, or to the monitor.

 

Place your Nano in an iHook on your desk or night stand. Feel the pleasant ergonomics and the rigid stability. Enjoy the added visibility of your iPod in its angled base. Make your iPod feel “at home” anywhere you use it!

 

Construction: 

The iHook is constructed of high-grade anodized aluminum and will be offered in the seven iPod Nano colors. All seven colors will be available for purchase and all will have the quality look of Apple® products.

We designed the iHook universal mount for convenience to stick, glue, screw, rivet or tie-wrap, depending on the surface requirements.

We also designed the shape of the clip for a fast and easy one hand snap-on for the Nano. Once the Nano is sitting in the cradle it has a much stronger, more secure grip than the original clip.

 

Manufacturing

In order to control quality and minimize delivery time, we have decided to manufacture the iHook at a local plant in California. Two companies will manufacture and finish the iHook.  

All design has been completed. Prototype testing has been completed by our team.  We are currently in the process of tooling and fixture design. We are working closely with the manufacturer in this process. Our tooling and production costs have been established.  All iHooks will be checked for quality and shipped from our Simi Valley studio.

FAQ

  • Will my iHook work with the latest iPod?

    The iHook is specifically designed for the iPod Nano Sixth Generation.  The secret to the iHook's stability and ease of use is its solid lock using the Nano 6G's built-in clip. 

    The Seventh Generation iPod Nano is a completely different product.  Apple has taken its magnificent Sixth Generation jewel and replaced it with a larger iPod.  The new Nano has no built-in clip.

  • So what is the future of the iHook, now that the Nano 6G is no longer made?

    Frankly, we think the Nano 6G is going to become a cult classic.  There are millions of them out there.  iHook is the ONLY practical solution that provides mounting stability for this little device. 

    We have talked with Apple.  They tell us that they have ordered Apple stores to return all unsold Nano 6Gs to Apple warehouses.  For a limited time, Apple will sell "refurbished" Nano 6Gs online, until their supply is exhausted.  This is your last chance to get your hands on a like-new version of this classic MP3 player! 

    If you already have a Nano 6G -- or you're about to rush out and get one before they disappear -- support our project!  A rare Nano 6G with a set of iHooks in a matching color is going to be a glamorous gift this holiday season.  (That's true even if you're giving it to yourself.)

  • How easy it is to mount?

    Mounting the IHook is simple and universal.  In most cases you just use double sided glue tape of your choice.  The tape is applied simply, and only requires a clean surface.  It provides enormous holding force.  (We recommend using a name brand like 3M for best results.)  Double-sided glue tape is also easy to remove (if you are upgrading your car, for example) by using GooGone or a similar solution.  

    For bike handle bars, plastic tie wraps are the natural choice.  If you are handy with tools, using screws can provide a nicely-finished solution.  If you are into fashion, you'll probably want to stitch the iHook to clothing.  You can also use buttons or fashion rivets to make your statement.  For ultimate flexibility, use your imagination and modify your iHook in any way possible.  The iHook is made of aluminum.  It's easy to bend and machine.  Since the cost of a set of iHooks is reasonable, you can't go wrong.

  • Why do I need multiple iHooks?

    Because you use your Nano everywhere!  This project is conceptually different from expensive docking stations.  We designed a simple mount so that it is economical to use many of them.  You can place an iHook in any location where you want stability and visibility for your iPod. 

    The Nano 6G's built-in clip makes it easy to attach and detach the iPod when you move around.  When the iPod is on an iHook, it won't get lost or pulled away by its audio cord.

  • Why is iHook in Design, and not in the Technology section?

    We are engineers, so we start with function. However we also believe that there is art in good design. That's why we wanted the iHook to look as good as the product it holds. Ergonomics is our way of connecting both function and artistic design.

    As this project developed, we realized that the iHook is more of a design concept. It is a new way of handling mobile devices that grow (is that the right word?) smaller every day. The iHook's design idea is more important than its technology.
