Legends of Dawn UPDATE#5

Hey guys,
There are lot of great news! We passed $20.000, 80% of the target goal and we still have over 13 days of the Kickstarter campaign left. Also, on Steam Greenlight we have over 17000 visits and things are going very good.
At this point we really have to thank you once again for all the support, help and advices that you are giving us. From our side, we'll do whatever we can to deliver the game which you will enjoy to play. We noticed how too often we get compared to the biggest RPG titles around which as flattering it is (even when mentioned in not exactly positive terms) is a bit uncomfortable cause we can't compete with big players unless you help us by constructive suggestions (within realistic expectations). Also, you will have lot of influence in further development of the LOD (and Land of Narr world as such). We have in mind a whole range of things which will make it possible for you to participate even more, once you experience the game and the world of Narr itself.
Thanks for your advices. We started making additional gameplay videos which will show game play in greater detail. Hope to post it here soon.

I hope that their are plenty of unique items to avoid causing drop irrelevance like in Skyrim. I always found an okay weapon with a unique backstory trumped any plain +2 sword of ball kicking with ease. Made my character feel more bad-ass for knowing something about its previous owners and their history.
Think I'll pass the kickstarter link around a bit, see if any of my friends bite.
Creator Roq on January 6
Yeah as long as the crafting doesn't make drops/rewards redundant (Archangel's point), that's the main thing.
Another annoying thing in Skyrim is crafting bonuses that are applied to armor and weapons, since when you get into town to do some crafting you then have to change all your gear ... and it does seem pretty silly having a breastplate with a +4 bonus to smithing :). This isn't helped in Skyrim by the poor inventory system (console port).
Creator Aurofinity & Dreamatrix on January 6
Septin, we have sommething like that. We have some rare materials and some quest to find these mats.
Creator Septin on January 6
I hope that there will be something special like legendary weapons and armor among the crafting recipes but to make these items you would have to gather alot of rare materials. Low drop rate could work but it would be much more awesome if you could go though long quest to find these mats. A example could be that the hero ventured into a dungeon and fought his way to the lower floor to find the mats which can only be found there.
Creator Aurofinity & Dreamatrix on January 6
Depose, I play a lot of spellforce in the past, and your idea unique-monster-drop-unique-item is good. We have something like this with monsters with unique items but not with unique ingredient. Put on the wishlist for LOD2.
Creator Disposable hero on January 6
when i speak about the recipe, yes a was in mind the system of NWNs, but more the system of spellforce series
In this game, you venture in the map to explore and first of all conquer the map, but while you take control of the map, you meet some boss or rare creature, which they drop those famous unique ingredient, a certain moment, you may restart (not completely) a map for some adding quest
i think it would be a god idea to place those unique-monster-drop-unique-item in place where you can find it if you're a good explorer
and while you explore the world and meet people, you can heard about some new scrolls of recipe and new unique monsters
the npc can give you some hints to find some of these recipe, but for a lot of them, you must explore Narr with eagles eyes....
i hope it will help

I hated how in Skyrim you just stood in town, leveled crafting skills and by effect leveled up your total level, then this would unlock better crafting components in shops in town and you buy those and craft more and level more and unlock better components. Then you craft top gear, get 2 enchantments on them and go easy mode through the game :( (especially with casters where spells then cost 0 mana, that was ridiculous).
Whatever crafting system LoD has, it must be better then Skyrim or whole crafting is pointless.
Creator gandalf.nho - Weresheepjaguar Huntress on January 5
Drakensang also uses a recipe system, basic things like common arrows have ingredients easy to find or buy, but top items are much difficult to craft, like the best arrows use harpy feathers which only appear in a small area of the game, and are unavailable as loot (except a very small portion found together with the recipe) or to buy, then these arrows are very rare and must be reserved for difficult/boss fights and the best longbow use a part of a dragon and this part is available once in all game.
Creator Archangel on January 5
Recipe scrolls are a good idea. NWN2 had a decent crafting system, you needed to find specific items and you had recipes to tell you which there were. You also had only a few components for the top items and they were held by most powerful enemies. So you needed to adventure and kill most dangerous enemies to craft most cool items.
Creator Disposable hero on January 5
this type of crafting is not fit for the kind of game you want to do, i think
as Asyx says, it will be just like in all mmorpg : go farm monster and lands, spend an enormous amount of hours in leveling craftskills and, in the end, totally out of the story and the world of the game.
why don't implement recipe scrolls (which you can buy some and find a lot more), which contain a unique powerfull item. Component (identify in the inventory as a quest item) will be dropped by unique monster
i hope it will help

Is it just basic "go and make 100 swords so you can make a better sword" crafting? How do I get the best crafting recipes? I'd love so have some awesome end game item where I'd have to travel through the whole world to get stuff and defeat awesome monsters to get their heart or whatever that has to be crafted into my weapon. A bit like in the classic days of WoW and Thunderfury.
Creator gandalf.nho - Weresheepjaguar Huntress on January 4
I love crafting in games and regarding the possible problem with too powerful crafting, one solution is limit the amount of ingredients for the most powerful recipes especially weapons/armors, like in Drakensang, where some especial recipes uses a ingredient which is available only once, like the best longbow, but basic things like ingredientes for healing potions/food and ammunition recipes can be easy attainable. At the same time, crafting must be interesting in all levels for players who like the option (LOTRO has another problem with crafting, in the higher levels, all professions except scholar and cook, who made consumables, are almost useless because of the legendary weapon system and the best armors being available only in sets from party content...)
Creator Roq on January 4
@alcaray - that looks like really sound advice. This project definately could use some way of lifting pledgers off of the $15 floor.
Creator Roq on January 4
@Archangel - you are right and guild wars 2 had/has a similar problem - since you can craft almost everything the rewards for doing content become meaningless. The problem is that with a single character you only have circa 15-20 slots in which to put items. But, if you can craft all those items there is nothing you can find as the reward for a quest or as a drop that holds any interest. I was surprised that Arenanet made such a basic mistake after Guild Wars 1 and 5 years of development.

Some good info on how to get the most of your ks project.

I hope you played Skyrim and seen how crafting can also unbalance a game. I hope you got a solution for a problem with crafting Skyrim had, as in you didn't need to adventure but just get your crafting up to high level and craft and enchant yourself by far the best gear in the game.
Part of the the problem in Skyrim was that you had too easy access to components needed (when higher level you could easily buy both best material to make best weapons and armors and buy best soulstones to make best enchantments). You could also abuse this to get more money out of this then you spent in making the stuff.
I just hope you will not make a similar error, crafting should be either another option or a supplement to adventuring in a RPG, not a best way to do stuff. Or adventurers would not exist..
