Estesombelo began with one sonority - a seamless drone created from one chord simultaneously being played at various speeds in different rhythmic patterns. After stumbling upon this ethereal new sound, we sat on the floor of our rehearsal space for over an hour listening to this loop through our PA system. There was an unsaid appreciation of this newfound realm. We were surrounded by this dynamic plateau made up of modulatory overtones, microscopic patterns and reverberations all of which we never intended to be present. The sound had a humanistic quality as if there was a sense of inhalation and exhalation occurring on repeat - as if it were breathing. We sat there dissecting and examining the loop for the next hour and came to a conclusion; we should construct entire songs and albums with sonorities that embodied our experience.

We recorded the drone, titled it Own and listened to it for the next week until the following rehearsal. Omitting "conventional" aspects from our work -  drums, vocals, verse/chorus structure - allowed us to focus on the significance of each note. If one chord or note was sufficient, we recorded it. 

Because it was just the two of us, we began expanding our sound pallet using more amplifiers and instruments, including French horn glockenspiel, bowed electric guitar/bass, piano and various forms of feedback. 

Our first two EP's Oppida von Ataraxia and eye-oe were recorded in the confines of our rehearsal space. Over time the sound became more hostile and distorted, an almost subconscious evolution as a way to hear ourselves amongst the other groups rehearsing simultaneously in the same warehouse. Cultivar, our third recording, was created at the studio of DePaul University, where we worked with an engineer to capture the sound mass we were producing at that time along with adding tracks of manipulated grand piano.

Our sound has progressed since then to become more chaotic, more dynamic and more dense. For this new recording, we want to produce a 3 track, fully mastered, seamless recording that will be as true to a live performance as possible. Something just as powerful, physical and all encompassing as a live performance. We will also be working with a string trio to perform short pieces to be used as transitional material between each track.

After many years of trial and error, progressing and revising our sound, we hope to document our hard work in what we believe is our most mature and innovative works.
