About this project
The creation of Princess Free Zone and the super hero character, Super Tool Lula, was inspired by my daughter who is now five years old. She made it very clear, from about the age of three, that there was nothing about princess or pink or dolls or lace that she liked. Instead, she was drawn to boy toys and clothes--and absolutely everything with a super hero on it! Shopping for her in girl departments was a nightmare; rarely was there anything that wasn't pastel colored or laden with princess designs and therefore nothing for her.
It got me thinking about the way kids are marketed to. I mean, why can't there be fun designs, bright colors, and super hero garb for girls? Why did my daughter have to identify with being a boy to find the things she liked? So, I created Princess Free Zone--a brand that represents an alternative to princess for both little (age three and up) girls and those who just want more choice in a market that tends to stereotype children beginning at a very young age. At the heart of the Princess Free Zone philosophy is an unapologetic acknowledgment that all girls are simply not the same.
So far, with the help of some very key people who believed in my project and wanted to see it succeed, I've been able to create the brand in terms of marketing materials, a website, illustrations of the character, and trademarking of the name and image. But, hopefully, with your help, I can take it a step further and begin to produce some tangible product for young girls to "come as they are" by creating clothing (specifically t-shirts) that offers a distinct style. After all, young children don't know that pink is for girls and blue is for boys until we tell them. I plan on producing the tees and selling them through some small, local vendors (there are some great kids shops here in Atlanta) and have had interest from other areas as well. I will also put them on my website.
I am also planning on furthering the character of Super Tool Lula in terms of her story--either through self-publishing the narrative or possibly webisodes. She is a young girl named Lula who plays the drums, helps her dad with carpentry projects, and loves science. As the super hero, Super Tool Lula, she fights bullies to help kids who are made fun of or mistreated. With Super Dog Chewie by her side, and her magic tools, she can't lose! I have written a narrative for her as well as a treatment that can be turned into a book or animated series. There are many other characters in her world and the story lines are endless.
So, Kickstarter is a great way for you to be involved with projects at the ground level and then watch them evolve. You can donate from $5 on up and I will keep you posted on the progress. My goal is $5000 in forty-five days. If I make the goal, your credit card is charged through an account at Amazon.com. If I do not reach my goal, your credit card is never charged. There are rewards offered at different donation levels as well.
I am passionate about Princess Free Zone and am a firm believer that it will be the next big thing for girls because I believe everyone knows a PFZ girl! I also believe that by raising capital on Kickstarter it will show that there is genuine interest for this kind of change. Please check out my website for more information and other characters at www.princessfreezone.com. After hearing and seeing my idea, I hope you will be excited too!
