Brewing Beer with Knut

Over the weekend, Jay and I stopped by Trillium Brewing Company to discover how Knut could be used to help the process of brewing beer. Trillium is a new brewery in Boston. Currently they do all of their brewing on a loading dock, but JC (the owner of Trillium) is building a new more purpose built brewery a block away.

Within 5 minutes of being at Trillium, JC handed both of us a beer. These guys make fantastic beer. Not kidding, the best beer we have ever had. These guys get calls all the time from local restaurants to get Trillium's beverages on to their tables.

Brewing requires constant measuring of temperature in multiple locations, something that Knut can do easily. Here is a Knut hooked up to the Mash Tub to watch sparge temperature. During sparging malted grains (mash) are put into the Mash Tub and hot water is sprayed over the mash. The temperature of this process plays an important role in the flavor of the finished beer.

Here is Knut sending me an alert email. JC knocked the probe out of the mash and the temperature fell below the proper sparge temperature.

Liquid is drained out of the mash tub and poured into a Boil Kettle and is left to boil for around an hour. Here is Jay standing about 3 feet away from the boil kettle. He didn't want to get any closer to the kettle because it was so hot, even though other people were standing closer to it.

We hooked up a Knut to the boil kettle and this is what we got. The 3 other Knut's in the list are not at Trillium but at other locations around Boston.

When beer is fermenting it can produce a lot of heat. Here is a fermentor that JC opened to show us the massive cooling coils. These coils keep the beer at the right temperature throughout the whole fermentation process. JC would like to be able monitor the fermentation temperature over the whole fermentation process, something that Knut should have no problem doing.
Thanks Trillium!
Richard

Yup - I'll be using this at the Horsefly Brewing Company, Montrose, CO for our new cold room & a repurposed refrigerated milk tank fermentor [5BBL] It has a temp sensor is a design flaw of being too close to the refrigerant cooling lines & giving way too cool temps for what the wort actually is fermenting at [Also the outside compressor for it overheats in this summer heat waves - Trips the high side breaker & it starts to ferment at too high temps for a no-so-good fusel alcohol off tastes.... This would be great for an early warning system!

Should I add any extra to my pledge for the 9 foot cable?
Creator Amperic on July 1, 2012
This is the standard waterproof sensor. This one is 3 feet but 9 foot ones can be had on special request. You can also use any DS18B20 (1 Wire) based probes that they are selling at many brew forums.

I'm interested in using this on a large homebrew scale, in the photos was that the standard external waterproof temperature? I assume so but just want to make sure also what is the length of cable for the probe?

That's exactly what we plan on using it for at Idle Hands Craft Ales... dying to get my hands on a beta unit to help me monitor our rather finicky cold room.
