About this project
This spring, Jamie and Vern will embark on a journey to the bottom of the world. Their destination — The Falkland Islands.
51º South is the untold story of the Falkland Islander. June 2012 will mark the 30th Anniversary of the war between the UK and Argentina. And while the attention of others will focus strictly on the events of the past, our stories offer the exceptional opportunity to capture the experiences, hardships, and diversity of a people that construct this truly unique culture. A culture that, no matter how small, challenging or remote their existence may be, commands the attention of nations around the globe.
With the help of their friends at Falkland Islands TV, this endeavor will take them from East to West, by bush plane, helicopter, 4×4 and on foot. They will cross stunning landscapes, isolated communities and left-over minefields — and into a culture left still very much uncharted.

And while they have generously donated gear and time to our project, they have no financial involvement in the production of this series.The islands remoteness and geographical distance from us mean that an undertaking of this size is simply immense. 51º South's producers, Jamie Gallant and Vern Cummins have been crafting documentaries together for a long time. Tales from Jamie's escapades at the bottom of the world captivated Vern, who from a young age possessed a deep fascination with the islands while growing up in the UK. "But what of the people that reside there and call it home?", they pondered. "We need to make a series" Vern declared! Jamie raised a pint glass and 51º South was born.
