A fancy schmancy special-order baking company. Bringing traditional (and not so traditional) desserts to the people!
** Note (12/7): YES!! We've reached our goal!! Now the burning question on all your minds: Can we exceed the goal? Absolutely! Exceeding the goal means better equipment, more recipe testing, possibly a better kitchen space, and, basically, more opportunities for Boujie in the near future. Please help me take advantage of the few weeks I have left here on Kickstarter and continue to spread the word, pledge if you can, and send me good thoughts! Happy holidays :) **
Hi everyone! First off, thanks for checking out my Kickstarter page! Hopefully you like what you see. There are two ways to help me out: You can make a pledge and cash in on some delicious rewards, and you can spread the word by telling everyone you know and encouraging them to help bring Boujie goodness to the people! Both are appreciated, I’m just happy to have your involvement! And don't forget to check out my video above, and stay tuned at the end for some silly bonus footage :)
Who am I?
I am a passionate, life-long, self-taught baker, who has finally decided that it’s time to bring my baked goods to more than just my family and friends. If you know me, chances are I’ve baked for you at some point; I DO love to bake for people! I currently cook and bake professionally at a wonderful local restaurant (what’s up Eureka Sea Grill!), but I’m ready to start my own company and, in turn, another creative outlet for my baking obsession. I have pages and pages of recipes I’ve collected, created, and refined, just waiting for people to ooooh and aaaaah over them. I’ve tapped into all sorts of local resources, gotten business advising and instruction, filed for permits, networked like crazy, and looked at various commercial kitchen spaces. Now all I need is a little help from my friends (and hopefully some friendly strangers!) to give me the final financial push I need to make it all happen!
What is Boujie?
Boujie (from the French for bourgeois) is Fancy Schmancy Goodness. It’s American-style cakes and desserts, with an extra touch of decadence (black tie optional, of course). Boujie Baking Co. produces top-notch desserts, with all sorts of fancy-worded recipes that you (and I!) can’t even pronounce, but without the hoity-toity attitude. It’s homemade, but it is certainly not your grandmother’s bakeshop. I will only do special orders to begin with, to ensure the business grows at a manageable rate, and to help build my name before taking any sort of larger risk (such as, eventually, opening a storefront!). An added bonus? I’m going where very few bakers have gone before, and Boujie — located in microbrewery-rich Humboldt County, California — features a line of desserts made with local craft beers. That’s right, I’m talking Raspberry Brown Ale caramel, Coffee Stout brownies, spiced IPA cake, Chili Pepper Ale ganache and Hard Apple Cider cupcakes. Crazy? Maybe. Delicious? Without a doubt.
Why do I need you?
Basically, because insurance and commercial kitchen space aren’t cheap. I’ve paid for everything that I possibly can, but those are two expenses that I don’t have the funds to cover. That is, until I can bring the Fancy Schmancy goodness to the people and my cakes and desserts start paying for it. But unfortunately, I can’t start making and selling those money-making treats until I have the insurance and kitchen space. Ah, the good ol’ catch-22. But fear not, generous cake-lovers! There’s something in it for you, too. Even if you’re not local, even if you’re in another country, I will find a way to get something yummy in your tummy. Unfortunately I can’t send entire cakes, but caramels and ganache are both very enthusiastic travelers. I’m not very good at asking for money, so I’ve tried to make the rewards as generous as possible.
Thanks again for stopping by, and hopefully you can help me out! It certainly would be the best gift I could ever ask for, or receive. Even if you can’t afford to spare a few bucks, just passing along the word would be amazing. And of course, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
What does “Boujie” mean?
It comes from the French word bourgeois, which is usually associated with the upper-class of the Louis XIV era. Think Versailles, French extravagance, all that fancy pants stuff. It’s also what my friend Tim used to call my desserts at the restaurant we work for when they turned out way fancier than I even anticipated. The name stuck.
Can we exceed the goal?
YES, and that would be incredible. More funding means more recipe testing, a more expansive menu, (hopefully) a better kitchen space situation, some useful wishlist equipment (nice round baking pans, food scale, a couple good spatulas, storage bins, etc.), more marketing, ingredients, dessert packaging, licensing and permit fees, maybe a farmer's market table (fingers crossed!), labels, beer (to recipe test with, of course!), and all the other odds and ends that make up a business. And of course more fancy schmancy goodness in this world! The goal posted is the minimum needed just to secure insurance and help me get into a very basic commercial kitchen.
Can I increase my pledge after I’ve already
Definitely! If you decide that you want to upgrade, just click the Manage Your Donation link in your Kickstarter account, and enter a new amount or choose a new incentive.
What if you don’t reach the goal in time?
If I don’t reach the goal, no pledges are charged, and Boujie doesn’t receive a cent. That also means you don’t get your fun rewards, and I will be very sad. This is what we want to avoid.
Besides donating, how else can I help?
You can tell everyone you know! Send emails, Facebook links, Twitter tweets (or something like that? I don’t really use Twitter…), text messages, even carrier pigeons and smoke signals. But just help get the word out there!
Can I give my incentive as a gift?
But of course! How nice of you. For now, just pledge as if you will be receiving the reward. After the campaign is completed, we will contact you, and then you can tell us where you want your reward to go.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
