I want to promote 3D Printing. I plan to do so by printing one thing from Thingiverse everyday then share it with the world on my blog.

Kick Start The Daily Print.

It is a journey I have thought about for some time, a journey to promote, and make accessible a process that I have been a part of for the last 8 years.  This process can ignite creativity in, art, design, engineering, or everyday life.  The process is known by many names.  Rapid Prototyping was what it was called when I first clicked the build button on a 3D System SLA 3500.  Now it is called "officially" (by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers) Additive Manufacturing.  
I think the folks on the RepRap project and Bre Pettis from Makerbot got it right though when they started to heavily use the term 3D Printing.  Suddenly this process that I have been passionate about for almost a decade, this process that has allowed me amazing freedom to create, and blow minds is becoming  available to everyone.  Suddenly this creative tool that I have been privileged enough to have access to has been thrust from a mind blowing thing to experience in a lab to the tool of choice for tinkerers, artists, and closet engineers. 
This makes me wonder.  This process that I have started to take for granted is opening new and exciting doors for a lot of people.  However, a lot of people are still un aware of the freedom that comes with a 3D Printer. 

Here is my Kickstarter project. I want to print one thing off of Thingiverse (www.thingiverse.com) Everyday for a year.  In order to fill this blog (http://thedailyprint.blogspot.com/) with posts, but also to promote the one tool I feel can change the world if in the right hands. To do this I need three things: a 3D printer, plastic, and Thingiverse (Ok, a fourth thing, postage to send printed objects to you) .   I need to raise funds to buy a Makerbot Thing-o-matic and some plastic.  Once that Thing-o-Matic is running I want those who contributed at the $20 and above levels to suggest items from Thingiverse to start printing, and or  their ideas posted to Thingiverse to run on that Thing-o-Matic. One design or idea a day.  That design or idea will be posted in all of its game/world changing glory for all to see.  Once the contributors have their suggestions and ideas printed, I will be printing any other suggestions or ideas received every day, sharing the end result, and shipping it to the designer/idea giver.  I want The Daily Print (http://thedailyprint.blogspot.com/) be a place where everyone can have access to that great creative tool called 3D Printing. I want to see what is possible if that one person with  a great idea had access to 3D printing.  This is my way to change the world.

FAQ

  • Will you print out an idea I have?
    Yes!  However, you must do the engineering and all of the CAD work and upload a .stl file to Thingiverse, and contribute at the appropriate level.

  • Why don't you use the printer in your video?
    That printer is at work.  I do not own it, and I do not buy material for it.  It is expensive to own and run.  Hence the need for a Thing-o-matic.
