A screwball comedy about the humour and heartbreak of online dating, set in an advertising agency that'll sell anything to survive.

What are we making?

Glad you asked! We'd like to be able to bring to life a screwball comedy webseries called People You May Know. It's inspired by real, actual, yes-they-really-exist dating website ghostwriters and some terrifying, personal, no-it's-nothing-like-Mad-Men experience from the wonderful world of advertising. This quirky series asks: "What does it take to sell yourself? And what does it take to sell out?"

** The video says we're making 4 episodes but we are now planning to make 8. How's that for value for money? :D

What will it look like?

We're shooting on clichéd yet undeniably beautiful Canon 5D and 7D cameras, with a look inspired by Little Miss Sunshine.

Who's in it?

We've been very lucky to sign on a bunch of wonderful, super talented actors and comedians for this series, including:

Stephanie Bendixsen
After acting in many university productions, Steph was chosen from hundreds of applicants to host the ABC's popular video game review show Good Game and it's subsequent spin-off show Good Game: Spawn Point. In People You May Know Steph get's back to her acting roots playing Dylan our tomboy protagonist.

Matt Okine
Growing up in Queensland is boring, so you need to entertain yourself. Matt did this by telling jokes, which he now does for a living. Matt has been a RAW finalist, told jokes on ROVE and Can of Worms – he even appeared in NBC's Last Comic Standing. As an actor, his roles have taken a more serious turn from talking to mermaids in H20: Just Add Water to talking to different mermaids in Aquamarine, Matt's done it all. He's even acted in his own web-series The Future Machine, playing a fictionalized version of himself. In People You May Know he's mixing it up as Otto, our uptight, gay designer who unfortunately doesn't talk to any mermaids.

Chris Leben
Starting his career by dropping out of acting school, Chris has written and acted on such shows as Hungry Beast, Balls of Steel, The Trophy Room, The Chaser and Lawrence Leung – mainly as the naked guy, or the guy jerking off, or the naked guy jerking off. In People You May Know, Chris takes a break from getting naked and touching himself to play Memphis, the arrogant freeloading jerk of the bunch.

Dan Ilic (cameo)
You may not know who Dan Ilic is – I barely do and I'm writing this – but he's an institution in Australian TV. He's worked on everything. Hungry Beast, The Ronnie Johns Half Hour, Can of Worms and even Australia's Funniest Home Videos. In PYMK Dan graces us with the mother of all cameos playing Olan, a one-eyed maniac in a suit.

Rowan Witt
With a flying start into the film industry as "Spoon Boy" in The Matrix and Oliver Twist in Escape from the Artful Dodger, Rowan has grown up and returned to acting – both on stage and behind the lens. Recently appearing in X and Australia's favourite TV show Underbelly, Rowan lends us a hand as the dashing yet dangerously inexperienced love coach, Cyrano.

Who's behind the scenes?

Brother-sister team Imogen & James Dall created the concept and are bringing it to life with a fantastic, experienced crew: 1st AD Allie Voyage, Art Director Sal Woellner, Lighting Director Hamilton Churton, Cinematographer Marc Stimson and Make-up & Stylist Bei Badgirl. We've also been lucky enough to earn the rights to some totally cute and cool alternative pop rock by UK band Sunny Day Sets Fire!

What will you do with your funding?

To be completely honest, $2000 doesn't actually cover the costs we've incurred getting this thing going, but we figured every little bit helps! The things we've had to spend our money on include:

  • About $350 to rent three radio mics, a boom mic and a multi-track mixer for six days.
  • About $350 to purchase props, costumes and set pieces.
  • About $500 to provide enough breakfast, lunch, snacks, drinks and coffees for a cast and crew of between 12 and 25 people for six days, plus rehearsals.
  • About $650 to offer as compensatory fees for the Sound Engineer and Editor, as we were not able to find volunteers. (Everybody else is working free.)
  • About $500 to offer as location fees for a large lounge bar scene and an outdoor café scene.
  • About $50 for website registration and hosting
  • As much as we can afford on promotion and advertising!

Thanks for your support!
