Who We Are
We're just a group of socially conscious artists who had the crazy idea that we could not only tell a great story, but actually touch people and make a change while doing it. Crazy right? Or is it? We’ve partnered up with “My Friend’s Place”, the most frequently visited drop-in Resource Center for homeless youth in Southern California, to help raise awareness to the problem of homeless youth.
Why We’re Doing It
When director Rotimi Rainwater decided to make his first feature film, he could think of no other story more powerful than that of homeless youth. Having spent six months of his early adulthood living out of his car, he got to see first hand the lives, and spirits, of these youth and it was something that stayed with him his entire life. “Sugar” is his way of telling the stories of so many who have no one to tell their stories.

What’s in the digital download package? Everyone who donates at least $10 will receive our digital download package which will include the following:
-All posters, banners and desktop wallpaper used in “Sugar”.
-Official “Sugar” promotional material like posters, wallpapers, etc.
-The first 15 pages from the official script.
When is the premiere?
We don’t have a date yet as the film has not yet been made. We are looking for a late 2011 theatrical release and will have the premiere a few weeks in advance of the film opening in the theaters. No worries - as soon as we know, YOU’LL know!
Can I give my pledge reward to someone else? YES! What a great idea! (And generous of you! Pat yourself on the back!) All you have to do is pledge with your own info (YOUR name/address must be given for billing purposes.) After our deadline, we will send a message to you at the email address you provided to Kickstarter. At that time we will request your t-shirt size, address, phone number... whatever information is needed, depending on your pledge. You will then reply with the information of the person who will actually be receiving the reward. It’s that easy.
Now that funding is in place, when will the film release? Filming is set to begin on November 29th, 2010 and the plan is to release at some point in late 2011. Nothing is set in stone... but you can be sure that as soon as WE know - YOU will know.
How will Rotimi get my number? When we have met our goal, you will receive an email (at the email address you have provided to Kickstarter) asking you to reply with your phone number. Please be patient as Rotimi will be making lots and lots of phonecalls to generous backers.
How will you get my t-shirt size?
When we have met our goal, you will receive an email (at the email address you have provided to Kickstarter) asking you to reply with your t-shirt size and an address where we can send your shirt. The t-shirts will be produced soon after we meet our goal... and yours will be sent to you as soon as it is made!
Can I increase my pledge once it’s been made?
Yes you sure can! Once you donate to our campaign, you might decide to change or increase your pledge and receive a different reward. Just sign in with Kickstarter and come back to our “Let’s Make SUGAR” page. You will see a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click that button and enter the new amount - or choose a new reward.
Can the goal be exceeded?
Yes! And wouldn’t this be amazing?! Kickstarter will allow all pledges until the deadline date. Extra funding can mean any number of positive things for the SUGAR film. For instance - the film may be able to show in more theaters - receive more extensive marketing... the possibilities are endless.

Is “Let’s Make Sugar” a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization?
Unfortunately, no, we are not set up as a non-profit. Your donations are gifts and are non-tax deductible.
If I donate, when will I receive the reward?
If our goal is met - all merchandise will be immediately manufactured and shipped to you. Other rewards will be scheduled as soon as possible after the goal is met and we will post more about this as we reach our deadline.
Isn’t $50,000 low for a film budget?
Yes - but lucky for us there are already investors involved. The $50,000 is the remaining balance of our total budget.
