About this project
Sports are a common ground for relationships, respect and awareness to develop. Like music and other forms of culture, it has the ability to unite people. This documentary will explore football as a means of social advancement and how this develops in South Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals this summer. The film will take a look at how the World Cup impacts the communities, educates the nation and influences perceptions of its people.
Throughout this tournament, there is the opportunity for Africans to really be seen and accepted as world citizens and for the African Union to claim a place as a global power. The question remains whether this will merely be a good show or the flashpoint to spur the critical support needed throughout the continent. With the World Cup being hosted for the first time by an African country, the eyes of the world will be focused on Africa. Quite a change, since it wasn't so long ago that African nations were not allowed to compete or their access was severely limited. South Africa is the logical choice being one of the most "advanced" and stable nations; however, what affects will this event have on Africans, their Africa and their relationship with the sport of football (soccer). Outside of the stadiums, in the areas where displaced Africans live, how will the 2010 World Cup affect the communities and people. What are the social movements taking place that will truly change the course of this nation for generations to come. We will engage and immerse ourselves within the communities of heroes, casualties and the challenged during this life changing event.
We are looking to raise the remainder of the funding needed for our small crew of intrepid, committed, fabulous women to travel South Africa and interview people from all walks of life and nationalities, from football fanatics to casual supporters. Our quest is to hear their stories, opinions and dreams for these communities and the world as a whole. Please join us on what is sure to be an amazing journey.
