Civil War battlefield tour company designs cutting edge guidebook to interactively immerse users in American history.
Civil War Battlefield Tours Presents the E-History Guidebook
CWB Tours is a Washington, DC based company which specializes in conducting immersive tours of historic sites - with particular interest in Civil War battlefields and their surrounding area. Recently, the company has broadened its focus to include the production of a first-of-its-kind, interactive, E-history guidebook. Once completed, this 'time machine on a tablet' will be available for rent at Virginia's Manassas National Battlefield Park, and for download from the Ibookstore. In order to see that our project reaches a timely and successful completion, we need your help.
Your funds will help us to...
- Compensate our mapmakers
- Pay our 3D image artists
- Remunerate our app and widget designers
- Handle image licensing fees
- Purchase research materials
- Buy the tablets which will be made available for rent at the battlefield bookstore
...and much more.
Once completed, our interactive books will allow users to connect with Civil War battlefields in a brand new way, and explore a multitude of historic sites with newfound depth and wonder. These books will create whole networks of historic interest.
This exciting technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we experience our history and engage an entirely new generation of people with the story of America. The E-history guidebook experience brings these sites to life through...
- Vivid and illuminating historical writing
- Striking video presentations featuring historical interpreters and experts
- Powerful audio clips which allow the user to hear the story from the very mouths of those who lived the experience (coupled with the music and sounds of the time period)
- Fully interactive 3D images. Cannons, farmhouses, and soldiers...oh my!
- Fully interactive maps which keep the user well-oriented and informed of their surroundings
- Beautiful high-def photo albums and image slideshows
- Eye-catching 3D charts, graphs and information displays
- Fun quizzes to test the user's knowledge
- Engaging puzzles, games and newly designed Civil War themed apps
- Online connectivity to historians and Civil War experts
...and the list continues to grow.
But none of this is possible without your support.

..AND NOW SOME BOOK CONTENT FOR YOUR EDIFICATION & ENJOYMENT
An excerpted reading from Major Sullivan Ballou's letter to his wife, Sarah, which was delivered to her posthumously following Ballou's death at 1st Manassas...
A video presentation on the fight for control Matthews Hill at the Battle of 1st Manassas...
A beautiful photograph of Bull Run Creek, the stream which the Union army had to cross in order to strike the Confederate line at 1st Manassas...
A wonderfully detailed map detailing the early hours of battle...
And just to show you we can write, here's a section of the book recounting the fight for the critical ground atop Matthews Hill at the Battle of 1st Manassas...
Upon cresting Matthews Hill, the 2nd Rhode Island faced down into the valley below only to be met with what one Rhode Islander called, “...a perfect hailstorm of bullets,” from Evans’ brigade. The same shocked soldier continued, “...round shot and shell was poured into us, tearing through the ranks and scattering death and confusion everywhere.”
Carrying only outdated smoothbore muskets with an effective range of no more than 200 yards, the Ocean Staters had to advance through a storm of long range rifle and canon fire in order to engage the enemy. Among the ranks, multiple officers fell, causing a breakdown of discipline.
Col. Slocum was mortally wounded by a bullet to the head as he mounted a fence ahead of his troops. The well trimmed lines of Union soldiers broke apart as green recruits instinctually banded together in company sized clusters to fight as individual units while, for the first time, the noise and confusion of battle began to disorient the untested warriors of both armies. The Louisianans, under the aggressive command of Chatham Roberdeau Wheat, unleashed a series of reckless but effective charges which further staggered the New Englanders. The 2nd Rhode Island was in dire need of assistance.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There's a lot of work to do between now and next spring in order to complete our first guidebook. Thankfully, we have a dedicated research staff with enough personal flexibility to ensure that time crunches can be met and overcome.
Success of the Rental Program...
Once completed, the battlefield bookstore will allow our E-book to be rented on a trial basis, in order to ensure that our product is a relatively hassle-free money maker for them. We have to make sure that our product is as user-friendly and engaging as possible so that this trial period can extend into a permanent housing of the books at the Manassas Battlefield. This is where our hard work, determination and ingenuity meets with your support.
