DIY Machine Shop is Los Angeles' Premier open access art, hacker, fabrication and prototype shop fully equipped for members use.
Welcome all fabricators, tinkerers, creators, innovators, dreamers and artists! Whether on purpose or by accident you have stumbled into an incredible opportunity. Los Angeles has long been the creative center of the United States. More great products, art, and culture come from LA than any other metropolis on earth. It is obvious to anyone that lives here that there is no lack of talent, but there is a lack of space to practice it in!
With your help I want to open Los Angeles' first fully equipped open access shop space. How many times in your life have you had an idea but not the ability or means to carry it out? At the DIY Machine Shop we will mix the expertise and equipment to help you realize your wildest dreams. From metal work to sewing our fully furnished shop would give you the machines and ability to create. Have an idea but don't know how to make it happen? We have that covered too! With resident experts we can give you the advice and guidance to complete a project that has been on your mind for years. Want to take your prototype to the next level? Use our extensive industry contacts to scale up production. Working late? We are artist too and know that a lot of the time your best work happens late so DIY Machine Shop will be open late and ready to help with those last minute projects. Want to learn a new skill? You will be able further your education with master’s classes.
DIY Machine Shop will have something for everyone, and using crowd funding is the best way offer this valuable service to the tinkerers of Los Angeles. The initial problem with opening an establishment such as this is that the machine costs are so high. By using crowd sourced funding we will be able to generate the capital to get the machines that everyone wants most. The more we raise the more machines we can buy. The more machines we buy the more people we can attract and the more successful the business will be. It is simply the initial funding that gets in the way and Kickstarter has solved that problem for us. As a group we can open something that will be infinitely helpful to the artistic and creative community of Los Angeles.
The Kickstarter money will be used primarily for obtaining machines. Through extensive industry contacts we will attempt to leverage the publicity DIY Machine Shop will generate to get as many discounted and free tools and machines as we can. Remember, the more funds we generate the more machines we can buy and the better equipped DIY Machine Shop will be. My Funding goal is the absolute minimum I would like to raise to bring you a fairly well equipped shop but with double the funds we could get all of the really cool CNC machines as well.
If the first launch goes well expect to see other branches soon after. Branch locations in planning are as follows. In California we have Pasadena, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Riverside, Corona, Huntington Beach, Santa Monica, Long Beach, Carlsbad, and Chula Vista. Other possible locations include Las Vegas Nevada, Reno Nevada, Tuscon Arizona, Phoenix Arizona, Albuquerque New Mexico, Dallas Texas, Huston Texas, Austin Texas, Denver Colorado, Salt Lake City Utah. If you have a suggested location Let me know!
Let the questions flow and the suggestions begin! I will be compiling a desired machines list from participants and donors as the funds are being raised. The initial opening of our first location will be within two months of the funds being granted. Initial location will be my current shop in Downtown LA but depending on the availability might change to another shop with better parking. Please pass the word along to all who may be interested in DIY Machine Shop!
Here is a list of the machines I would like to have depending on donations and funds. Some of the larger more expensive CNC equipment might have to come down the road depending on how far I can stretch the money. Please let me know your location and desired machines upon donation so i can hone in on the wants and needs of our patrons.

While it is tentatively located at my shop in Downtown LA I am hoping to procure a larger space with better parking, also in Downtown LA. Downtown is geographically the best spot due to the high concentration of people and freeway access.
I have factored in a shop size of about 2500sq ft. I am currently working on a layout assuming this size.
While I don't want to name the teachers yet I have four friends well versed in print, textiles, wood and metal fabrication. They will be part of the mix as well as intermittent inters from the local art schools. I will of course be there helping with all the design, cnc, and metalwork. for some of my previous experience visit the link to my current coroflot portfolio showing some of the concept cars I had a hand in.
I want to be competitive with techshop so membership will be monthly, and less than $90.
Hours will tentatively be Monday through Friday 12:00-9:00 and Saturday/Sunday 10:00-9:00. hours will change pending what the people want.
Beyond the standard eye protection and clothing requirements, members will be required to pass basic safety classes for each of the dangerous hand tools they want to use. The more expensive cnc machines will require assistance and I might just have them pay a low price to have one of our teachers do the machining.
I plan on using a http://buildlog.net laser and a custom 80/20 3d printer using makerbot electronics and print head.
