About this project
Hello Potential Superheros in support of justice!
Over the last year I visited the homes and documented the stories of men and women, LGBT American service members who have been impacted over the years by the discriminatory policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Many spoke about what it was like to serve as a gay person in the U.S. Military; some recounted the day they were told of their discharge. Retired Navy Captain, Joan Darrah recalled 20 years of hiding who she was.
I have a growing list of LGBT Veterans across the United States from Maine to California that have contacted me and want to tell their stories! This project has been completely self-funded, because of this the only participants I have been able to include have been limited to the east coast area.
With the funds raised on Kickstarter I am going to hit the road on a 4 week cross-country road trip visiting the homes of to photograph and record the stories of LGBT Veterans allowing them to finally be Seen and Heard.
The money donated will go towards travel expenses (gas, lodging and food), printing cost for rewards - postage, postcards.
Proud to Serve is EXHIBIT OPENING is Veteran's Day (November 2010) at the LGBT Center in Manhattan on 13th Street 7/8th ave.

My obsession with documenting life began as a young girl growing up in Boston’s "North End” where everyone knew everyone else and everyone’s business.
I am drawn to the hidden, marginalized and often overlooked populations—I identify in a way with those who do not fit into the mainstream, the voiceless.
Life is a stage, Admission is free, our clothing, faces and gestures tell the stories of our lives as individuals and as members of communities. My camera is a passport, a documenting witness to worlds and lives into which I would not otherwise be welcomed. With this access, my hope is to expand and facilitate tolerance for unseen populations.
