We are two women street artists traveling to South America to document female street artists there through photography and interviews.
We are Lauren and Rachel, the core members of Uncommissioned Art Squad. We are two street artists in San Francisco who have been working together since we met a year and a half ago.
On March fifth, we’re flying into Bogota, Columbia. We will travel through Columbia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Brazil, stopping to work in cities with street art communities of interest. We’ll be spending about six months total traveling.
Graffiti and street artists have always been predominantly male. As female street artists, we are especially interested in the contributions women make to this art community. We want to interview them and record their stories. Out of this, we will make a book about the women we meet. Because of the personal nature of this project, we do not want to remove ourselves as narrators from the documentation process, but want to include comics, illustrations, and writing about our adventures.
We have contacts with female street artists in some of the cities we’re traveling to and will also be seeking new contacts as we arrive. We will work on projects alongside women as well as collaborate. Most of our projects use wheatpaste, a strong glue made of a mixture of boiled flour and water. We’ve wheatpasted posters, portraits, and collage. We’ve also done some work with stencils and paint. Check out our blog for examples of our work.
Our documentation will include black and white film portraits of the artists from a Nikon F camera. We’ll also be documenting their artwork in color on a digital camera. Our interviews will include questions about their work, lives, and motivations for making street art. We have a flip video camera for small film projects and we plan on keeping an active blog with throughout our travels.
Up to now, our fundraising has consisted of bake sales and DIY fundraising in parks around the city. We’ve raised enough to buy our plane tickets and for bare bones travel expenses. The support from this Kickstarter will allow us to spend more time making art and documenting the women artists we meet and less time working in exchange for room and board. The money will also help cover film and supplies. If we raise more than we are asking, we will fund projects in South America for young street artists.
