About this project
Out of the Box Theatre Company is a new non-profit theatre group dedicated to providing the Santa Barbara community with alternative theatre, focusing primarily on contemporary musical works. While the artistic community in Santa Barbara is impressive for its size, musical theatre has long since been limited to the year-round national touring groups. We’re a group of recent college grads bringing grassroots theatre back to the neighborhood. Local actors. Local musicians. Local directors.
Following our successful productions of Reefer Madness in April 2010 and the concert/song cycle, Party Worth Crashing this summer, Out of the Box Theatre Co.’s next production will be Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, to be performed at Center Stage Theater in October 2010. While the show debuted off-Broadway as early as 1967, this will be the Santa Barbara premiere of the uncensored production. With a score including familiar songs such as "Let the Sunshine In" and "Aquarius," Hair explores sexual identity and challenges racism while creating an irresistible anti-war message of peace and hope that continues to resonate with audiences 40 years later.
Our production of this show will include a preview concert and Q+A with the Santa Barbara Jr. High School theatre department and a series of “guerrilla theatre” promotions in the center of Paseo Nuevo Mall, where downtown shoppers can find themselves face to face with a blast from the past, handing out flowers and “be-in” invitations and encouraging the crowd to sing along.
HOWEVER, WE NEED YOUR HELP.
Beyond the predicted costs of our theater rental, performance rights, musicians, and tech director, an additional $3000 in our budget would help us to hire a set designer, cover material costs, clothe our actors (hey, they’re only naked for about twenty seconds!), and make this production the best it can possibly be without depleting our personal savings accounts any further. Out of the Box Theatre Co. was created to reach out to the Santa Barbara community… but in order to succeed with this, we must first reach out to you.
