Update #6: We did it!!!

Posted on November 7, 2011

Last night at 7:15PM we called out "THATS A WRAP" in my bedroom in Paramus, NJ, where we filming Jackpot. I can't tell you how amazing it felt. Thank you all so much for making this possible! I never could have done this without your help. We've got a wrap party in the work

We arrived on Friday morning before dawn and headed over to Dunkerhook Park to film the last part of the film first. It was freezing cold in the woods but the crew put on a good face and before long we were getting amazing footage and the performances of lead actors Ethan Navarro and Adam Fleming, as Jack Hoffman and Ricky Swayze, were beyond my wildest dreams. There was lots of running, screaming, fighting, and a transformation that's gonna knock you out when you see it!

On Saturday we headed to the parking lot of a kosher deli in town where I had had a similar experience of bullying as the one we were about to play out onscreen. It was hard staging these scenes, trying and wanting to protect the actor playing Jack from taking any of this really personally, but realizing that in order for the film to be true and honest, I couldn't protect him. We worked tirelessly all day and then jumped in the car and stole an awesome driving shot and then were done.

Yesterday, we were in my bedroom for the opening of the film, and the end. My bedroom was brilliantly transformed by Robert Sumrell, a fellow Kickstarter backer and friend, into 1994 more authentically than I could have imagined. Everyone on the crew did an amazing job. My DP Andres Karu was a joy to work with, committed to thinking about every option, and how things would edit together. His crew were fun and determined. Kayla Viani, my costume designer, knocked it out of the park with her super authentic 90's looks - as did stylist Brian Buterbaugh and makeup artist Emma Strachman. Top Chef's Ty-Lor Boring generously donated his services to preparing all our meals - I swear no crew has ever eaten as well as mine did. The PA's had great attitudes, selfless in the best way. We also had great help from another Kickstarter backer Bryan Horch, and script supervisor Jocelyn Jacobs. But the biggest support came from my two friends and producers Ethan Weinstock and Adam Keleman, who were constantly thinking ahead and really making everything go smoothly. I could not have done it without them, no ifs ands or buts about it.

Of course I can't conclude without mentioning the terrific help of casting director Henry Russell Bergstein, who brought me an amazing group of kids - every one of whom was focused, intelligent, and fantastic. If you're a filmmaker in need of a teenager, you need to audition Ethan Navarro - he's going to be a big star. Gorgeous and talented Adam Fleming was another amazing find - he brought the 1994 porn star realness to a whole new level.

Alright, I'm going to try and put myself back together and figure out a post-production schedule, and of course, prepare all the Kickstarter rewards to send out to you! We'll also have a wrap party, and a few more exciting events to celebrate our achievement and the work of all the artists in the Kickstarter rewards collection!

Thank you again!!!!! You did it!!

Adam
