Whimsical artwork made from "recycled" CDs & DVDs.
The "I Like Turtles" art project has been planned to take my whimsical artwork to the next level. I usually draw on paper or cardstock, but I thought it would be fun to expand my horizons while at the same time "recycling" damaged or used CDs by turning them into colorful turtles painted on canvas. It is my personal goal to create a total of at least 100 CD "turtles" during the course of this project.
All backers who pledge at least $2 will be mailed a thank you note depicting my original CD artwork. (The image(s) will be small - for clearer images, order prints.)
Funds raised by this project will be used to create the "I Like Turtles" collection. I need to replace my current art supplies, which were primarily purchased from yard sales and dollar stores or given to me by friends. I am especially in need of canvases and high quality permanent markers. Additionally, I need to have my creations scanned before saying goodbye and sending them to their new homes. I will also need to cover printing and shipping costs.
While I would have liked to set a higher funding goal to purchase the electronic equipment that would allow me to produce the entire collection without involving a commercial printer, my first priority is getting my artwork in the hands of those who will enjoy it. To that end, I have set a low end funding goal that will provide the basics to get the project done. With more funding, however, I could take this project so much further!
HOW DO I CREATE THE TURTLES?
Each CD is hand-painted, with detailed "doodles" added in permanent marker. The head, legs, and tail are likewise painted onto the canvas, then embellished with designs in permanent marker. I choose patterns and designs at random, just drawing whatever comes to mind. For that reason, no two pictures are ever exactly the same. This will be true even if I make more than a hundred!
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Size permitting, I scan each finished "turtle", canvas and all, to my digital collection prior to shipping. I retain all rights to use the images. My express, written permission is required if you wish to duplicate the artwork or prints in any way.
Original artwork - painted CD on canvas- is available for a pledge of as little as $35. Why is the price so low? Again, it's because I want to get my recycled CD artwork into the hands of those who will enjoy it.
Small canvases will be 6"x6" square. Medium canvases will probably be about the size of the 2 CD picture depicted in my video, which was 10"x16". I intend to purchase only back-stapled canvases so that the artwork does not need a frame to look good.
CUSTOM ORDERS
As time permits, I am willing to customize colors and designs to suit purchasers, but this will depend on the volume of requests. For the greatest freedom to dictate what you want, choose one of the two high end reward packages.
My original eight CD "turtles", depicted in Update #1, are also available on a first come, first served basis, as are the "turtle family" depicted in Update #2 and the "Turtle Foursome" from Update #4. (I'm not sure why there is no Update #3.) If you want to claim any or all of the turtles from Update 1 as your own, make your pledge and then claim the turtles you want by posting a comment. Just double check the comments first to make sure your choices are still available.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
Given the supplies that I need, I expect to be able to create up to 100 turtles a month for however many months it takes.

Studio extravaganza! 25 CD turtles! Tell me how many canvases you want and I will work with you to create your dream collection. I will provide you with scanned images of other "turtles" (no replicating, forwarding, or re-using without my consent) and you can tell me which colors, styles, patterns, etc. you prefer. I don't do replicas or duplicates, but knowing what you like will enable me to personalize your collection to your taste so that I can create a one of a kind collection you will be proud of!
