Nine hours to go, I don't think this is making it as a patron project. However, from the material posted, it looks like it's probably close to in the can already. I know this is the second swing at patronage for LPJ Design... maybe the third time will be a charm.
@ Ben: Good Points! Our writer on this is James "Grim" Desborough who was also the writer on the Obsidian Twilight Campaign Setting. James and I developed the concept of A Place Beyond Hell at the same time we were developing Obsidian Twilight so a lot of the back work has been done already. On the area of artwork it will be Claudio Pozas. This will be the first time we have worked together but we have wanted to for a while. Since this is my "first" real attempt at a patronage project I hope that we can meet with most people from patron projects. Wish us luck!
Great, I'm glad to hear that! But that *still* leaves little time for patron interaction, input, and feedback, which is one of the draws of doing a patronage project. I'm not doubting your ability to put the product together, but I am saying that you need to do things slightly differently for a patronage project.
Who are your authors? Your artist? This is all great stuff to know if you've already got it lined up. It would certainly help add to the attraction if you've got an author or two that we might know, or if the artist is someone we're familiar with previously. The trivia bits are fairly uninspiring in terms of preview material. You're playing it close to the vest and that's not going to get patrons on board in 30 days.
Patronage projects are all about involvement with the patrons and creating the investment in the final product. That means drawing the process out a bit longer and providing them with the opportunities to give you feedback. Blasting patrons with a firehose of material for six weeks and then diving into the edit cycle will be an interesting experiment.
Well since these people who are doing this it is full time work for them, your times are off. My writers can give me 24K words in about 1 week to 10 days. About a week for editing and since I am doing the layout and I do about 10 pages an hour, I think I will be done in about a half a day. Since one artist is working on the project and he knows roughly how many pieces of art there will be (30 pieces) we expect he will be doing th artwork as we are doing editing. After 500 PDF products and 20 years as a graphic design I have this down to a science. Realistically this sould only take 20 - 25 days to put together on the production side at the most.
You've got an approximately 60 day development cycle? (August 27-September 27-October 27) That seems very short. I mean, 32 page book rolls in at around 24K words, so you'd be cranking out about 1000 words a day for the first month, then allowing for 2 weeks of editing and 2 weeks of layout, proofs and publish. Art briefs would need to be commissioned based on short brainstorms maybe 2 weeks into the project with a 4 week deadline. That seems like a very aggressive timeline with limited opportunities for feedback.
Well I will not be attending Gen Con this year (Family commitments) and we plan to release A Place Beyond Hell in OCtober just in time for Halloween 2010. We are still talking it up online and we hope to start releasing artwork from these project very soon.
BUT... we still need to hit our goal of $3,000 to make this proejct a reality. Right now we are focusing on get out as many copies of Obsidian Twilight to people as possible and have them enjoy the setting, which in turn would get them interested in A Place Beyond Hell.
Ok, but this is the first time you've mentioned *any* of this, and we're 30 days out with Gencon about to consume the gaming brainspace in a week. I don't know if you've got plans to be there, but that's going to be the storm on the radar for easily the next two to three weeks, as people talk about going, what happened, and what they plan on doing from there... To stand any chance of making this go in that window, you've got to ride that wave. Soon needs to be very soon.

@Ben: Let me answer this one at a time:
<<>
YES!!!! Cult of Black Glass is the main cult of H'Laqu.
<< or creatures out of space,>>
You mean like Blackglass Golem, Void Elemental or Screaming Cell of Eternity?
<< or remnants of ancient races? Are you considering items, relics? Incantations? Spells?>>
You mean like Antilife Bolt, Shardstorm or Void of Despair?
All will be revealed soon...
Any chance you could discuss the number of creatures, templates, or mechanics you're looking to cover? Maybe a better idea of the content? "The genre inspired and influenced work of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos to this post-apocalypse survival horror fantasy setting" leaves a lot of room. Are you looking at cults or creatures out of space, or remnants of ancient races? Are you considering items, relics? Incantations? Spells?
Thanks,
-Ben.
