About this project

Transitions can be hard for kids. Any change can seem like an unexpected change, and it can be challenging to move from one activity to the next, especially when changing away from the very engaging world of computers.

Many educators and health professionals recommend setting clear limits on the amount of time children should be on the computer, but enforcing this "screen time" can be very frustrating.

Attempting to share one computer with multiple users can also be difficult. Siblings and parents are often met with whining, begging, bargaining, or an all-out argument from the kid who has "almost leveled up," say, or "can't save right now."

BEEP is a USB device that gently transitions kids off of a computer when their allotted screen time is up.

BEEP's animated eyes act as visual cues showing the passing of time. As a child's screen time winds to a close, BEEP falls asleep, and so does the computer.

BEEP has bendable arms that allow him to be positioned on any size monitor, or on a desktop.

FAQ

  • Testing was initially done on a PC. However, it has been budgeted into our funding goal to develop the software for use with Mac, and LINUX systems as well.

Furthermore, if we exceed our goal, we will also begin research and development for mobile devices and video game systems.

  • For interested parties I have created a spreadsheet which gives an overview of the development that is still needed in order to produce our first batch of BEEP.

It seems like a lot of money but keep in mind, these numbers are much lower than what a similar product would cost. I have done a lot of development work already and plan do do a lot more! This will cut costs considerably.
