Hello to our wonderful supporters!
It's been a week since we closed out the Minnesota Fringe, and the numbers are in. We were the bestseller at our venue, which meant we got the Audience Pick encore performance; we were the #6 best-seller overall out of 163 shows at the Fringe this year; AND we were voted Best Musical in the Fringe by ultra-pass users! Below are just a few of the kind words we received from audiences and critics alike.
All of this was possible because of your support and your contributions. We cannot say thank you enough -- but we'll certainly try! Now that we've decompressed a bit and things have gotten back to semi-normal, we'll start sending out the incentives corresponding to your donation. We'll do the best we can to be speedy about this but please be patient in the meantime. :)
Thank you again -- and keep in touch, as we have not seen the last of FRUIT FLY: THE MUSICAL. ;)
All our love,
Max and Sheena
What the critics said:
"A girl and her gay male best friend: It's become a staple of TV and movies in recent years. But seldom is it dealt with as cleverly as in Sheena Janson and Max Wojtanowicz's tuneful tribute to their 17-year friendship. Michael Gruber helped them fashion this brisk, breezy and very funny little two-person musical, its songs full of witty rhymes in the Cole Porter tradition. Brimming with affection and honesty, it chronicles their evolution from being an imagined couple to his coming out to her dating and his jealousy. It's sweet-spirited, high-energy, crisp as can be and totally delightful." -- Rob Hubbard at the Pioneer Press
"This musical explores their evolving friendship as a gay man and a straight woman, full of broad physical comedy and sharp, sarcastic wit. Their depiction of gay culture and the emotional complications of this kind of relationship is funnier than "Will & Grace" (which they reference), and has some delightful songs." -- William Randall Beard at the Star Tribune
"A moving and honest tribute to friendship. It is so beautiful to see two incredibly talented performers in perfect harmony. Light flows off of them in waves. You get to drink it all in, leaving the theater with a very sunny high." -- H Adam Harris at Minnesota Playlist
"A simple and tremendously entertaining Fringe offering... Wojtanowicz and Janson fairly burst with acting prowess, musical chops and pure charm." -- John Olive at How Was the Show
"The happiest show in the Fringe! ... The dynamic duo of Max Wojtanowicz and Sheena Janson are top-notch singers-actors, and Michael Gruber's score lets them shine. Nikki Swoboda's deft direction makes the implausibility of cabaret-in-the-round a feature, not a bug." -- Wendy Gennaula at TC Daily Planet
What our audiences said:
"This. Was. Perfect. Tremendously well-written script, cleverly minimalist set/props, ideal use of an arena space, understated but essential live band, flawless delivery, singing that will knock you dead it's so good, and a storyline that could easily have been tired and flat but nimbly and enthusiastically avoided that fate. The energy and joy were so contagious, the show so damned good, I want to see everything these two are in forever and ever."
"Max and Sheena's story of their longtime friendship had the audience roaring from start to finish... through dynamite acting, catchy music, brilliantly simple sets and props, crisp comedy, and beautiful staging..."
"This show brims with honesty, good will, innovative use of props and staging and music that is top top notch. This show deserves a full run somewhere more prestigious that the Rarig arena. It's beautiful, witty, and hilarious with plenty of sass and finesse that made me literally disappointed it was over when it was over. A true five star!"
"I cannot stress enough how wonderful this show is, I can't find a flaw (besides wanting more)... Bigger and better than Fringe."
"WOW! This one has it ALL! This clever musical moves quickly, seamlessly telling the story of a beautiful friendship with good humor, intelligence and FLAIR! The music was beautifully matched to the voices and the lyrics were masterfully witty."
"This show's not for everyone. If, say, you're a bitter, hate-filled sociopath, or plankton, it may not be your cup of tea. Everyone else will be carried along by the two terrific performances and the show's big, generous heart."
