Holy shit, you can still order Flipper t-shirts from Burning Airlines! He used to let me look around the warehouse but you had to order via mail because he didn't have a license for a store.

I went to Jane's Addition last night in Atlantic City and wore one of those City Garden t-shirts. A couple of people said something and one guy said in '88 he went there and parked in the grocery store parking lot behind CG. His truck got stolen and he got in trouble because he wasn't supposed to be there. They found his truck later all damaged after it was taken for joy ride off-road.

City Gardens was mentioned on SiruiusXM Radio. The Lithium (90's alternative) channel is doing a Nirvana special to celebrate 20 years since their album was released. Jon Stewart did a "town hall" with Nirvana and there was a discussion about stopping fights. Jon said he could have used that experience when he was bartender at City Gardens.

Tim, the survey was sent out about 2 or 3 weeks ago. It would have been in an email from Kickstarter. I unfortunately cannot resend it, Kickstarter does not allow me to. Let me know if you find it.

      Best, Steve

I was able to track down some of the old promos from the early 80's (thanks to Jon Solomon who saved tapes from back then). I didn't find the one I was looking for but he came up with ones I had completly forgotten about. These promos have not aired in almost 30 years. I posted them at http://punk.org.

"What's bringing everone to King Tut's City gardens? ... It's a fun place, a big dance floor with room to dance and Randy Ellis the great DJ ... The chicks and the fantastic New Wave Sound .... all the nice looking guys ... great place, great people, and swell drinks .... City Gawdens in Trent'n, it's the only New Wave place mainly ... You all have a good time and you can Go-Go ... 1701 Calhoun St, just blocks away from the old Korvette Plaze"

"Sheena doesn't go to NY anymore to see good music ... you don't have to either. King Tut's City Gardens ..."

Russ Smith on August 20, 2011

      Congrats on all the pledges.

I lived near Trenton when the whole scene started. I think the whole scene was driven by the college radio shows. I think Randy and his "punk, funk, and other junk" show influenced many other DJ's at WTSR, WPRB, etc. and that is what drove my interest in going to CG. I used to like when he called Lee Parris.

Also, you had the indie record stores like Record Collector and Princeton Record Exchange.
I remember you didn't just go into Record Collector to buy something, you hung out for a couple of hours. I remember the one guy, "Beatle Bob" got a divorce over spending too much on his Beatles collection and his wife got half the records. It was always big news when Randy stopped in and if you were actually in there when he came in that was really big. This is where I first heard about CG when it was first opening up.

Does anyone have a recording of the original CG radio promo? "King Tut's City Gardens, Central NJ's ONLY New Wave Club ... Just Blocks from the old Korvette's Plaza" The first time I went there I was in the parking lot of the closed down Korvette's and I had to call for directions.

Great work Steve and crew. I love sharing this with my kid's band and their fans. They have their own generation's take on music, but it draws heavily from this era. I was there, then. Best of luck!

Best time of my life was here. I am not suprized by trailer's assertion that Randy made no money - all of they shows were like $10, I am sure the bands got paid and I bet that place was expensive to insure. But they sure didn't spend money on keeping the bathrooms clean.

Happy to lend a hand to this film, saw many shows at City Gardens
Black Flag ( before Henry ), DKs, Cramps, Fleshtones, Gwar, Lush,
Sonic Youth, Flipper. There were very few Clubs back then
Emerald City ( Cherry Hill NJ ), The East Side Club ( Philly ), and Randy's
huge Warehouse !! Many happy memories of taking the van up Calhoun St.
Hope everything comes together, it really was something !!

Not knowing what to expect.....this trailer is AMAZING!! I had an idea that this would be a properly done and a well needed stamp on a piece of my life that was all important. It is great to see friends involved in it, so I know a great story will be told. I started off as hardcore kid that loved Ska. The NY Citizens & Toasters shows there were great. So much so that I said to myself, I want to do that one day. A few years later and some Oi!/Punk/Mod/Soul/R&B/Rocksteady/Skinhead Reggae albums later, I helped form Agent 86, which became the Crash Bars, and ultimately Inspecter 7. It was a complete thrill to be on the very stage that I used to look up at and sneak in a few stage dives from.

So at the end of the day, in telling the old City Gardens stories, I mention that if I had to describe myself I'd have to say a "City Gardens NJ Hardcore Kid". Thanks Steve & company for doing this. Good luck & and all the best.
