In my recent photographs and short film, Casa de Mujeres, my mother plays the role of three women in one fictional Latin American home. These photographs can be read as portraits of my mother as her various selves, like a nested doll, and as images that reveal the conflict of vanity, race and class that live within one woman.

In Casa de Mujeres the three women are the lady of the house, her darker twin sister and her maid. A fourth character, the daughter of the lady, played by myself also appears. The photographs as well as the film describe a house of women as they move through their daily lives together. They communicate through gestures. My fascination with identity of the self, and my personal relationship to my mother has moved me to make this work.

To make Casa de Mujeres my mother and I have traveled to Panama, Guatemala and Nicaragua in search of colonial homes. The history of colonialism deeply informs this work.

To date I have gained some wonderful recognition for Casa de Mujeres. This year I will participate in El Museo del Barrio's S-Files bienal (http://www.elmuseo.org/)  in New York City, and I am participating in a prestigious artist residency program at Smack Mellon (www.smackmellon.org) in New York City.

To continue work on this project we will once again be traveling to a location in Central America. In order to do this, we need your help. With your support we will pay for plane tickets to our destination, wardrobe, film supplies, printing costs, editing costs and equipment rental.
