I'm a software engineer in the San Francisco Bay area. I co-founded DavisWiki.org in 2004.
For the past several years I've has worked on a variety of nonprofit efforts to engage everyday citizens. I oversaw the development of the popular VideoTheVote.org, the world's largest coordinated video documentation project, and was the lead developer at Citizen Engagement Laboratory, a nonprofit focused on empowering traditionally underrepresented constituencies.
I'm a graduate of the University of California, Davis, with a bachelor’s in mathematics.
It hadn't occurred to me to post project updates on kickstarter directly -- my understanding is that those all go out via email through Kickstarter's system. We've been sending monthly updates over email to Kickstarter backers (w/ links to the blog, etc). By importing the email addresses into our own mailing list system we can send out more customized emails with headers / footers and so forth. Based on stats, most people on the lists (+kickstarter list) have been opening the emails. So rest assured that everyone who pledged has been getting all of these updates (at least as far as I know & open stats seem to agree).
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's possible to edit the text on the Kickstarter main page any more. It would be really good to add a link to localwiki.org/blog and other places. Arf!
The last Kickstarter update for this project was back in September of last year; how about an update on how the software development has gone, what the money has been used for, and how and when voting for a pilot community will take place? The blog at http://localwiki.org/blog/ doesn't really address the folks who pledged to back this project, nor is it directly linked from this project's main page.
Great idea!
Ahhhh, just shy of 1k!! Best of luck!
Pledged, UCD '03 :) Good luck, Phil.
Hi Nori, thank you for pledging! We opened the Davis Wiki in the Fall of 2004, but it did take a couple of years to get really big. That initial period of growth is the most challenging part, and why this pledge drive is so important--it will ensure the LocalWiki project has the resources to guide new communities through that initial stage.
I graduated from Davis in 06. I wish we had this when I was there!
