A Captive Behavior

An Installation at School 33 Art Center March 16 - May 26th, 2012

 After coming together through similar interests, we intend to collaboratively explore ideas of perception, memory, psychology, and space. Our interest is to combine our efforts to create art that is fully engaging with the viewer, both through tactile experiences and emotive qualities. We are both interested in the power of built structures and spaces and their connection to the mind.

In our installation at School 33 Art Center, we intend to focus on how architecture is a facilitator of behavioral control. Our piece consists of a staircase that wraps around the perimeter of the room. The staircase at its highest point will reach a height of 6 feet and cover a distance of 42 feet. We plan to make subtle changes in the rhythm of our stairs, by varying the rise and length of each individual step. By making changes in the rhythm of the stairs, we begin to counteract the familiar autonomy of this activity. These irregularities create greater tension between the viewer’s actions and anticipations of their experience within our space. By changing both the architecture of the room, and the understood form and function of a staircase, we allude to the effects that constructed spaces have on the psychological.
