Update #3: Music FOR Saharan Cellphones
A bit more saharan cellphone related media during the wait as the record is being pressed -- Portland producer Gulls has just wrapped a remix project of the original cassette involving some 17 artists, musicians, and remixers aptly titled "Music FOR Saharan Cellphones":
"Drawing on gifted producers and musicians from a variety of stylistic backgrounds and nationalities, each artist selected and re-interpreted a musical moment from the source material. From bass laden sound/clash ventures, abstract re-creations, and even an amazing autotune cover, the end result holds a rich assortment of well informed musical statements. Reflecting the energy and fidelity of its origins, these versions take on their own rare and exciting form. Using the mp3 as the medium, the Music and the Musicians become the diplomacy."
The project is being hosted over at Boomarmnation (link here) and is also available via free download at bandcamp. In addition to these formats, the comp. will also have a cassette release, a split 7", and a limited microSD release of 30, hand numbered memory cards, which will be mailed back to Kidal, Mali...

Canton Becker on October 10, 2011
Hi,
I followed the link for the free download at bandcamp, but I don't see any way to download it for free. Just purchase (but name your price) -- $0 does not seem to be an option. -

Hey Canton -- sorry for the confusion. Just enter "0" in the price field....

Update #2: Funding a success!
Greetings all -- just wanted to send a quick thank you to everyone! The funding went well beyond my expectations, so thank you for your support and for passing the word on the project. The record is currently in production, and we're still looking at a final delivery date around mid-November. I'll keep updates via kickstarter here on the progress....
Thanks again for making this possible!

Chris,
Could you provide a link to any previous work that is available? It would be great to be able to listen to some of the earlier stuff while we await your next opus.

There's plenty of music on the website:
Also, the record "Ishilan n-Tenere", released on Mississippi Records, is available online for streaming/download :

Lastly, I was a guest on Dj Rupture's WFMU show last Monday, and played a few jams from the cellphone project, as well as a nice cover of one of the songs:

Update #1: halfway funding and new video
Greetings all -- thanks for your support! The project marches along and has reached half of the funding goal with 14 days remaining. The master has just been returned, an always amazing job by Timothy Stollenwerk @ Stereophonic, and I've finished up the artwork for the back cover, which draws on image stills from videos from saharan cellphones. In keeping with this idea, I've put together a video on the kickstarter page inspired by the cellphone videos -- enjoy!

Sahelsounds is a project begun in 2009 exploring the cultural and musical phenomena of the Sahel region of West Africa. The Sahel is a landscape of dusty scrubland and parched earth, sparsely populated by nomads and semi-nomadic herders as well as first generation urban youth on motorbikes and ed hardy knockoff t-shirts, with cellphone memory cards and usb keys dangling around their necks. Through field recording, interviews, video, youtube archeology, cellphone data collection, sahelsounds uses archiving to transmit a story.
This is really great music. Thank you.
Just received the LP today. Great Music. Do you plan to release more recordings on LP after the "Lewlewal de Podor » one ?
En tout cas, bravo et merci !
