Two Books: Full Color Photo/ Haiku Collection. A Tour Du Force of Japan with an accompanying Documentary. +Awesome Loot!

GOALS OF THE PROJECT:

  • 100 Page Full Color Photo Book of the 'American's View of Japan'.
  • 100 Page Haiku Collection
  • 90 Minute Documentary about the Process

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

"Brandon and I were up late one night. On our cell phones at 2am, wondering how we could take everyone we know to the mythical world of Japan. We desperately wanted to bring our friends and loved ones, to take them to hidden temples and shrines, to feed them conveyor belt sushi and handmade noodles, to fill their hearts with love, hope, and a touch of enlightenment. Alas, jumbled schedules and general poverty made this dream impossible. But the great thing about dreams is that you can have as many as you like.

The funds won't get us to Japan, but they will help us bring it back. We want to create a pair of books; one of haiku, and one of photos, but it doesn't end there. These books will be stylized and arranged in such a way that one can discover their own journey throughout the pages.

For example: On your second read through of the haiku book, you start to notice that every so often a haiku ends with 2 periods. By reading just the ones with this special distinction, an entirely new story emerges, one of a lost temple found, and then lost once again.

But thats not the end of it. While looking through the photo book, you notice the same distinction near the page numbers of certain photos. Now, this journey of to a lost temple comes to life across a dozen photos. Towards the end of this journey, you notice something new in a few photos. Something that just happened to catch your eye. And now, a whole new adventure had begun.

The funds will be used towards creating, printing, and shipping the first batch of books. From there, we will be able to fund future editions of the book in other locations and with other themes. In time, we will create an entire series of books, all with interchangeable stories, adventures, and journeys.

Currently, we have created a "proof-of-concept" edition using haiku and photos from past adventures. This has given us the experience to pre-plan some of the hidden adventures, as well as give us a road map of what we need for completion. Our adventure to gather these stories and photos will take place this September, with delivery not long there after.

  • When are you two actually going?

    September 12th-30th. 18 days. Two solid weeks for travel.

  • When are you looking to deliver our goodies?

    Ideally, October 23rd for the Ship Out Date. That will give us two weeks to complete the work when we return, and 1 week to do the printing. We expect that you should all see your goodies in the final days of October 2012.

  • What does our donation go toward?

    Film, 1 Camera Upgrade (I need a new lens for the trip's wide angle shots), Publishing costs, and a small stipend for food.
