Three adventurers are going to Siberia to film their kayak circumnavigation the largest lake in the world, Lake Baikal.
About Our Trip
In June of this year Matt and Hannah Abbotts, and Anya Gleizer will be heading to Central Siberia to kayak more than 1,000 miles around Lake Baikal. Baikal is the largest lake in the world by volume and also the deepest and one of the oldest. We will be traveling to the lake in June on the Trans Siberian Railroad. Launching our kayaks in Irkutsk, the largest city on the lake, we will spend the next 50-70 days exploring the shoreline as we make our way counterclockwise around this freshwater gem. We will see miles of remote bays and rocky shores as well as running into some of the local wildlife. Baikal is home to the world's only population of freshwater seals and also has a thriving population of brown bears. We will return to Irkutsk near the end of August and board a train heading across Mongolia and into China. From there, if time allows, we will continue into Vietnam and fly back home.
The trip was inspired by Matt and Hannah's 2009 circumnavigation of Lake Superior. Superior and Baikal are enormous bodies of freshwater, largest in the world by area and volume respectively, but couldn't be more different culturally and ecologically. We decided that experiencing both would not only provide for a fantastic adventure, but also give us a greater appreciation and understanding of two of the world's most important freshwater resources.
About the Film
In the past we have shared our adventure experiences through photographs and written journals. While these are great and we intend to continue doing this, they have always left us feeling like we were coming up short. The answer to this shortcoming seems to lie in video. With this film we intend on documenting our adventure, from the day we leave home to the day we return. It will capture the highs and lows of the experience, from exciting days battling high winds and big surf to the doldrums of waiting out storms. It will highlight the spectacular scenery in the Baikal region and give a glimpse into the life and culture of the people who live on the lake. This will give us the opportunity to bring this adventure into people's living rooms and show them more accurately what it's like to paddle around the largest lake in the world.
What Can You Do?
Well, contribute of course. That's the whole reason we're doing this. But on top of that you can tell your friends about the project. Share by Facebook, Twitter, and by good ol' word of mouth. The more people we reach the better chance we have of reaching our goal.
Kickstarter is all or nothing. Either we raise the entire $4,000 or we don't get a dime. If we don't reach our goal we can't make this film, and you won't get any of the sweet rewards we've put together. So tell your friends. And then get them to tell their friends.
Where your contributions will go
Our trip around Lake Baikal is paid for. We've worked hard for the last two years to ensure that. The money you contribute here will go directly to our film project. We've never made a movie before so there are a lot of things we need to even get started. Shooting in extremely remote places adds another element to the whole thing. We need it all. Cameras, tripod, batteries, memory, solar charging set up, etc. On top of all of the gear we will have to edit all of the video we shoot when we get home and that takes a bit of specialty software. We estimate that we need at least $4,000 to get this project rolling. More will just make a better film and make shooting easier while we are out there.
For more information about our trip you can check out our website at www.asuperioradventure.com. There's a lot of info about our Baikal trip on there as well journals and photos from our past trips.
If you have any questions, concerns, or would just like to say hello please feel free to contact us. We love talking to people.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
