We've launched an exciting new project of our own! Introducing the Kickstarter app for iPhone!

Funded! This project successfully raised its funding goal on April 21, 2012.

The chips are flying!

Update #3 · Apr 3, 2012 · 15 comments

Wow! We are just 12 days into the campaign and almost 350% funded! This is really incredible. Thank you!

As a result of your incredible support all of the molds and other production tools are now being made. Steel chips are flying!

Here are answers to questions posted in the comments section.

SDK update. The Galileo SDK will be available in mid April. Please email dev@motrr.com if you would like us to let you know when it is available.
Will cases fit in Galileo? Galileo was designed to be as small and portable as possible.  We are investigating producing a slimline Galileo-compatible case. Is this worth pursuing?
GoPro? YES! You did see a GoPro on Galileo in the video. We are working on version of Galileo that will be compatible with a variety of cameras including the GoPro. We plan to solidify the specs of future Galileo versions before the conclusion of this Kickstarter campaign.
Future iOS devices? Since Apple does not share future product specifications, we are unable to guarantee the next iPhone or iPod touch will fit in Galileo. We have designed in extra space to accommodate a slightly larger iPhone but we do not know if it will be sufficient for the next iPhone.
Ship date? We are planning on shipping to Kickstarter backers in June.
How much noise when moving? The current prototype is very quiet but the iPhone microphone does pickup the sound of the gears when Galileo is in motion. We hope that the Galileo production gears will fit more precisely and thus produce less noise.
What Apps will be available at launch? We are developing several apps for Galileo and working with app developers on integration into existing apps. We will post and update in the coming weeks listing the apps we are developing as well as apps that Galileo is being integrated with. Please let us know if there are any apps you think would be incredible with Galileo integration by emailing dev@motrr.com.

Thank you Kickstarters!

I imagine you are looking at the Gigapan for inspiration for the virtual tour stuff. It frees you to use the iPhone's conventional camera to capture very high resolution images with minimal optic distortion. I've used the GigaPan but think a touchscreen interface via an iOS app will make this a superior solution. The bluetooth module could open the the device to high quality, lightweight cameras such as the Sony Nex or Olympus PEN series fitted with a light prime lens. Any of these solutions will surpass the GoPro - at least for still image capture.

I am confused. The original FAQ said: "We're planning a separate GoPro adapter. It won't be available for launch, but it will allow the Galileo to be programmed and controlled via Bluetooth, with a GoPro installed."

To mean that meant I could use the original version with an adapter to work with my GoPro.

This update says: "We are working on version of Galileo that will be compatible with a variety of cameras including the GoPro. "

To me that means the original will not work and there will be a future version of your product that is going to work with other products.

I bought into this version because I wanted to use it mostly with my GoPro. I was willing to wait for the adapter. Am I going to have to buy a completely new unit in order to do this? Are you releasing an adapter so our original versions will work?

I am not sure I want the first version if I have to buy a future one once you figure out the GoPro stuff.

A few things, mostly covered by others already:

-Sound conduction is mostly through solids, so a gel based layer in the holder and a semi-floating connector could help (i.e. sorbocoil gel and a slightly sliding connector). Also "solving it at the source" helical gears are quieter, or possibly herringbone gears. Prototyping those has gotten much easier these days. External mic inputs are also a big win for most filmakers, although that does potentially mean "carrying more crap", which is kind of a shame with such an elegant start.

-GoPro use, I'm another +1 for that. there are a few immediately obvious applications to me, time lapse panning and FPV type applications (although due to size, this may be more long pole, balloons and kites than RC aircraft). I presume that inverted use is possible?
Another use that you've intimated about is the 360deg virtual tours of indoor environments. The wide angle on the gopro is particularly well suited for inside use, although distorted, it gets far more perspective than narrower fields in indoor spaces.

I imagine folks will be using the wifi bacpac to enable similar remote video functions as the iPhone option. No idea if you can integrate with gopro for pan control, but it'd be worth trying for.

I'm really excited about this project, looking forward to trying it with my nieces, they're gonna freak out completely!

No brainer backing your project... I pledged $85 to get a Galileo but was wondering if I can wait until the GoPro version comes out because this application is the one I'm most interested in. Noticed it in your promo video. Thanks... Elegance lives!

What a stunning design, I'm sure this will make it into MOMA one day. Makes me wish I had bought the White 4S. A nice presentation video to boot! I love Kickstarter! You've got my pledge for $160 cuz I'm sure someone's going to see mine and want one for themselves, so I'll get two. What a great idea! Awesome!

I like the idea of a slimline case that will be compatible with the Galileo.

Regarding a GoPro compatible version, I hope you may also consider a form of adapter to retrofit to an "older" Galileo so those of us who early adopt don;t need to buy another unit just for this support.

Didn;t see it mentioned if it will have external power options...such as mini USB (or even 30-pin for future communication) to USB?

Also saw a suggestion for an optional clear dome for some weather protection. That would be awesome.

@jon buckland - Great idea on the external mic! We are working hard to integrate the GoPro - Can you describe some of the usage scenarios that you envision for the GoPro?

Creator Motrr on April 4, 2012

@Sulka - We think the noise from the gears is being transmitted through the housing. We hope to make it less perceptible. Your idea of using an external mic or a mic on another device is a great idea.

I would like to 2nd what Jon said "re the noise question. How about a mini jack for an external mic source?" that would be awesome, please do this.

2 questions. I saw the Hero cam and assumed it would work with this first product. If that's not so, please keep us posted, love to be in on that one too.

Second, re the noise question. How about a mini jack for an external mic source?

      Keep on keeping on!

    11. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Sulka Haro on April 3, 2012

Does the mic pick up the motor sound over air, or as vibration from the the point where it's attached? If latter, damping the vibrations could work.

If you're working with someone implementing a video recorder, would it be possible to pair two iOS devices so that the device used to control Galileo would record the audio and send it over to the camera (or vice versa), so the motor noise is not picked up?

It would be awesome if the Galileo would work with iMotion HD (http://itunes.apple.com/be/app/imotion-hd/id421365625) and their remote app iMotion Remote (http://itunes.apple.com/be/app/imotion-remote/id433868802) . Maybe Frames (http://www.studioneat.com/products/frames) would be nice too.
For the pano lovers something like Sfera (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sfera/id386287735) or 360 panorama (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/360-panorama/id377342622) .

It's gonna be hard to wait until june!

It would also be awesome if you could combine Galileo with the sticky pad of the Capta mount (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1689824368/capta-stick-it-lean-it-wrap-it-attach-it). Then you could stick just about any device onto Galileo :)
