Thanks for checking out our Kickstarter page! In what may be our greatest challenge yet, Slugs & Bugs is applying its unique blend of sincerity and silliness to a CD filled with lyrics straight from scripture! The new CD will have at least 20 songs, both silly and sweet, with melodies that will have you and your kids memorizing bible verses without even realizing it. Through Kickstarter, you can become a partner in the recording process, secure your pre-release copies of the CD, and choose from an awesome list of rewards (including a Slugs & Bugs DVD with all our animated videos, available exclusively to Kickstarter supporters!).
The Goal: 40 Days, 40 Nights, 40 Grand
Forty grand is a big number. We could not even attempt a project of this scope without you. So how will those funds be used? Let's break it down: The album will have at least 20 songs, and that means lots of production cost. We will spend over a month in the studio recording the world class musicianship you've come to expect from a Slugs & Bugs project, as well as a two day recording session in North Carolina with the African Children’s Choir! If (when!) we successfully raise the $40k budget, it will cover all of the production expenses as well as the artwork, design and manufacture of the CDs themselves, and travel expenses to and from the session with the kids in North Carolina. If you're unfamiliar with the African Children’s Choir, it is my great honor to introduce you. For the last 20 years, the ACC has performed all over the world with children 7 to 10 years old. Many have lost one or both parents due to the devastation of war, famine and poverty, but through the ACC, the children are provided with a stable, healthy environment and a quality education. The children are radiant with hope and their music is absolutely extraordinary. We are incredibly excited to have these amazing Ugandan kids singing with Slugs & Bugs.
Other exciting details... my friend Sally Lloyd-Jones, best-selling author of A Jesus Storybook Bible, Thoughts to Make your Heart Sing and other brilliant children’s books, will appear on the CD as a speaker and reader. Not only is Sally a fantastically creative and delightful human being, she was born in Uganda, and raised in England which somehow gives her the perfect voice for reading to children. And of course, my old friend Andrew Peterson will inevitably turn up somewhere to make merry or mischief or both.
If you're curious about which scripture passages we've turned into songs, you can see some of them here at the Slugs & Bugs Blog. When I look at all those verses, and I think of all the CD players and minivans and ipods that will be playing those words over and over, I can't help but think - this may be the most important work Slugs & Bugs has ever done. So join us! We'll get kids and families singing the Bible together for years to come.

Potential obstacles for this project are similar to those in any human endeavor. But this is the fourth Slugs & Bugs CD; we've learned from past experience and have budgeted and planned this album in such a way that with your help, we are 100% confident in its success. Producer Ben Shive and I will be the ones driving the project forward so if you're the praying kind, you could pray for us.
I've dedicated my career to bringing this music to families, and I'm in it till its finished. Let's do this.

I'm glad you asked. After all the expenses were factored in, the last Slugs & Bugs CD cost $27,000, and that's with everybody who participated giving me a discount rate. This CD will require 10 more days of studio time than the last CD, and I'd like to pay Ben and the other musicians a little bit better.
For this CD, the recording budget is $30,000, and since the cost of using Kickstarter is 10%, the $6000 that is left will go towards artwork and design, CD duplication, postage, and plane tickets to North Carolina. We'll still pay for plenty out of pocket, like the videography at the ACC session, the production and duplication of the DVD, and whatever else we've forgotten.
The long and short of it is, every penny of the Kickstarter money will go towards funding this project, and unless we substantially exceed our goal there will still be be a financial cost for Slugs & Bugs. Thankfully, it will only be a tiny fraction of what it would have been without supportive fans like you that are willing to invest in the creation of the music they love. I feel incredibly blessed to live in an age where this kind of community interaction can take place on such a large scale.
