What do you do if you're a theater company rooted in improvisation in a city where there are starting to be as many improvisers as there are musicians in bands and distinguishing yourself from the herd is harder than ever? What do you do if you have interests ranging far beyond the confines of what's considered normal for an improvisational theater show? What if you have a lot of friends who belong to different scenes who don't really know each other but you're sure would hit it off once they met? What do you do if you have ongoing access to a performance venue and have a three week hole in your calendar and aren't sure how to fill it? Well, if the city is Austin and the company is Gnap! Theater Projects, you start a new festival.
What's hybrid performance? Well, in Gnap!'s case it involves taking improv comedy and mixing it with all different kinds of artistic disciplines that we're also interested in. And Church of the Friendly Ghost specializes in programming musical events that defy usual boundaries of performance disciplines. It's a match made in heaven.
