"Green" is a multimedia art exhibit of poignant beauty about the inequality of sharing and distributing the earth’s bounty.

WOW! We made our goal with 7 days to go! Thank You so much! You are Awesome! You are the one and only "GREEN team". The team that will enable the message of "GREEN: a paradox of abundance and scarcity", to open in Fort Worth, TX in January and more....any additional funds pledged above our goal will enable this exhibit to keep accepting exhibition venues.

Let's see how many exhibits GREEN can have in 2012 and 2013. The message is so relevant and provoking—let's get it out there! The "GREEN team" backer names will be displayed on the wall of the Fort Worth Community Arts Center during the exhibit. Come by and see the exhibit if you're in the neighborhood.

Again with deep appreciation for your support, Marietta

Hey Kickstarters:

Sharing my vision with you for my multimedia exhibition, GREEN: a paradox of abundance and scarcity, is very exciting. I use color as subject in my work because color resonates with people and stirs up associations and feelings. Cultures are deeply affected by the colors in their environments.

Green is an exhibit inspired by my Artist residency in Northern Thailand. While embraced by the abundance of vegetation and food in Thailand I became acutely aware of the paradox—the deprivation in the surrounding countries of Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. The inequality of sharing the earth’s bounty seems senseless and immoral to me. Also the abuse of our planet by its human inhabitants endangers all the living things I was witness to.

This paradox produced poignant reflections that are expressed in this work... the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ so to speak. The beauty draws you to contemplate the fragility of the earth’s bounty, and thus it’s people’s, condition. It is NOT about my Thai reflections exclusively. It is about the universal theme of our moment; ‘the haves and have nots,’ the 99%, the disenfranchised and the power brokers. It is about fairness.

It is made up of several components: five written text plates of poems (example below), 16 Vapors which are beeswax sculptures made as Thai wrapped food but hollow, Seeds which are 27 paintings on paper on wood, and 18 photos. There are also four videos.

GREEN

Look beyond the concrete and black top
Unlock your memories
and look to the original world

See GREEN the vibrant color
of Earth still living
in generous abundance

Trees and plants in silence grow
bringing forth their splendor
for our wordless wonder

We linger with you amongst Earth’s soil
not wanting to be apart
from your green caress

But careless not seeing
the bounty brought forth
has estranged us

Shall we not know the earth
for we are tree and fruit
and vegetable ourselves

Are we divorced from our family
unconnected, orphaned and lost
with limbs torn off

Where will sustenance
and refuge come
without the mother of green hair and dress

It has taken over one year to get all of the parts of this exhibit made. It is now ready to be exhibited—yippee! It has it’s first showing at the Fort Worth (TX) Community Arts Center. It will open January 6th with a reception. I have also been applying and getting positive responses to college and university galleries, museums and art centers throughout the country. It is my hope that this exhibit will tour for 2-3 years.

The most important priority right now is to crate and ship the work to Fort Worth. The problem is that art venues and institution budgets have been severely impacted by the recession and they can’t contribute to these freight costs. That’s where you come in. You can help to get this message out by contributing. I hope you partner with me. The excitement I experience from the potential of Kickstarters is that I would have people collaborate with me who believe in this project. Wow, such affirmation. By the way do you have a place in your community that needs to exhibit this work? Let’s get it on my list!

I’ll stay in touch with all my partners and let you know the itinerary of the tour, articles that are written and any news I have to share. I can’t wait to get started.

Thanks for hanging out with me and supporting this work.

Best,

Marietta

FAQ

  • Great question! The $3,200.00 will definitely cover the crate-making for all 67 pieces of the exhibition and the necessary installation components eg: brackets etc...

Shipping the work will also be covered to Fort Worth and to the next destination. If funding beyond the original amount comes in—great we'll apply those monies to shipping to other venues moving forward. My thought is also that the Kickstarter event and the Fort Worth exhibit will create momentum and fans that will propel the exhibit forward.
