We’ve all grown up with the dream – from George Jetson’s saucer sedan to Doc Brown’s “Back-to-the-Future” DeLorean, flying cars have been sensational works of fiction. Dating almost as far back as the Wright Brothers, numerous inventors over the years have tried to make cars with wings. But all of them have been commercial failures, and some of them even died while testing their inventions.
Now the dreamers are trying again – but this time a bold team of MIT-trained engineers and a designer of nine America’s Cup racing yachts are in the driver’s seat. They created a full-scale vehicle back in 2009 to prove their design will work, complete with retractable wings that fold and unfold in just seconds. For three years we’ve been the only crew with exclusive access to filming their testing on the roads and in the air. And now, in 2012, their new “Transition” prototype vehicle is being primed for delivery to the public!
Led by award winning and Emmy-nominated filmmakers Al Ward, Peter Koziell, and Laura Molta, our production team is creating a short feature documentary and webisode exploring the challenges, frustrations, failures and successes during this historic, modern-day attempt to deliver on the dream.
Our Kickstarter campaign for production funds would be devoted to capturing the answers to all the fascinating “What If” questions surrounding this technology. After years of self-funding, our tank is running on empty and we need support to continue sending our camera crews and producers to cover everything from the worlds largest aviation and auto shows to the upcoming high-risk flight-testing required for certification. Covering the dangerous testing process is expensive because these one-time-only events require multiple cameras at various angles.
Will the flying car change the way people commute? Can a vehicle be light enough to fly -- yet durable enough to perform alongside trucks and SUVs on the highway?
