      Interesting points.

Being someone who loves the human body my instincts are to make modules that can be accessed w/ the body, not the voice.

The fact of the matter is that some of us think with words, and some of us think with kinesthetics. I fall in the latter category, and it feels more intuitive for me to move my body around to communicate "back in time" is to move my hand back. It's also probably because I love being uber precise with my body (as evidenced by the fact that I do liquid dancing).

I think, though, that there is something about 3d space that beckons voice interaction -- noise is such a volumetric experience as is, so why not integrate?

i've often thought that it might not be a bad idea to create gloves that allow you to utilize your thumb to touch certain areas on the gloves themselves to, in essence, create a pair of gloves that have a more personal and intuitive feel. when manipulating objects, the more depth to kinesthetic actions will be found in a way that involves more intimate use of the hands. Maybe this could be mixed with the technologies emerging similar to xbox kinect and you should be able to use your fingers to manipulate objects, cast spells through sequences of finger tip touches, and so on while also using the gloves to direct movement inside games/virtual environments.

@joaquim virgili...neural pathways are unique to the individual and would likely need to be mapped and understood extensively before we can even begin really creating technologies that will allow us to do that. chemical messaging in the brain can be induced but will have to utilize a very very very accurate means of actually firing the neural pathways in ways to provide individuals with actual experiences. Add to that the fact that there will likely need to be someone (or something) creating programs for this and that each program would have to work with multitudes of different operating systems makes me believe it will be another 40-50 years before we have that capability. people really underestimate the complexity of the human mind... ;)

Update #1: Public Musings on the Subject of Augmented Reality

Posted on November 16, 2010

A few weeks ago Daniel Cooper of Ball State University invited me to take part in a study he was conducting on the topic of Augmented Reality. He emailed over a list of very smart questions.

Instead of writing out a response, I figured I'd post a video of my response. Here it is - me rambling on about some interesting topics from information design, 3d spaces, architecture, narrative, theater, etc...

Enjoy!

Was a great response, it really puts your perspective out there and what you are trying to accomplish. With your theater background, you are used to really digging into the visual presentation, with an experienced perspective on many details most of us will take for granted. It's sortof like, 2D is a picture of the Grand Canyon, but actually being there is 3D. The 3D version presents a view that is exponentially more impressive and "visceral," as you would say.

You are also pointing out the limitations of current 2D media. We are in the infancy stages of 3D, which in my opinion, will be THE interface within 10 years. I could turn that into a 60 minute response, but that is the future.

Also I ended up doubling my pledge since you took the time out to talk to someone from Ball State (my alma mater haha)

      Thanks Derek!

Yeah, I love spouting off about all this stuff. Probably even too much for my own damn good : ) If you're actually up for it, please do turn it into a 60 minute response and post it on ustream or something!

Thanks again for the pledge... and I guess it sounds like I should do more of these, eh?

I am a 3d information artist. That is to say, I take packets of 3d information and transport them in ways that are emotionally intriguing.

I strive to make work that is both emotional and intelligent – work that registers with both the body and the mind. To appeal to the body, I construct narrative by activating our visceral instincts to connect. To appeal to the mind, I deliver 3d information in ways that are logical, transparent, and obvious.
