Year One is a project where I challenged myself to draw 2-3 pages of comics about every week that went by for my first year in Philly.
Upon moving to Philadelphia, I challenged myself to draw one page of comics about every week that went by for my entire first year in a new city. I ended up drawing 2-3 pages a week, coming up with the 136 page book that I plan to self-publish.

Prior to drawing Year One, the longest comic I had drawn was only 6 pages long. Finishing a 130 page story is a huge accomplishment for me and I learned more about comics, productivity, time management, and dedication in this year than in any other.
Year One is about being in a new place, trying to convince yourself to be outgoing, reassuring yourself that going to bed at 9pm on a Friday night will not kill your social life, new adventures with new friends, being confident, exploring new relationships, keeping in touch with old friends, the highs of summer and the lows of winter, embracing community, tiptoeing toward new love, holding on to an old one, family, and friends that are like family, open relationships, punk community, companionship, loss and grief, appreciating home while searching for new variations of that word, and generally being a twenty-something year old trying to figure things out.
I drew every week as it happened, so I crossed my fingers that in the end I would end up with a cohesive and interesting story. I think I accomplished that with Year One. I've been posting pages every week on my website at http://www.everydaypants.com/yearone
You can start at the very beginning and read it online, but nothing is like reading comics in print! Year One, the book, will be 130 pages printed with offset printing, perfect bound, at 8.3x10.8! This will be a nice hefty book. Forgive my inability to draw a perfect circle.

When this thing was going to be 52 pages (1 page a week), I had intended on photocopying and stapling it like a zine. Now that it's 130 pages, I would really love to give it the proper send off into the world that it deserves. I spent literally hundreds of hours drawing this book throughout 2011 and 2012 and it helped me reflect on each week and my personal interactions in a way I otherwise wouldn't have. Maybe you'll find something in Year One that you can relate to.

I'm trying to raise the absolute minimum needed to print this book and cover fees. However, I'll need to spend additional money to pay to have the books shipped to me, to help cover the cost of rewards, to promote the book, etc. Any extra dollars would be spent directly on putting this book out and would be greatly appreciated!

I'll be printing Year One through 1984 Printing, a DIY minded, ethical print shop in Oakland: "1984 Printing offers sheetfed offset printing and short-run digital copier printing on 100% recycled papers using soy-based, zero-VOC cmyk inks and recycled black ink, plus animal-free book binding. "
Your money will also be supporting them!
